    Default Grievances

A question on Article 52, section 1. A road driver came into the terminal and dropped and hooked himself when there was a city man there. To make the grievance stick can you get away with the numbers of the tractor and set he came in with or does it have to be the numbers of the set he is leaving with?

There should be a sign in and sign out sheet at every terminal as per the contract. Your Steward can look at the sheet and find the out going numbers. As far as any money may go the company will owe none since the city man was being paid. But you will establish the fact that it is and will be city work in the future. Where was your Yardman? Let me guess you don't have one on days. This is a growing problem in our industry the elimination of a day Yardman.

Yeah it is a tough time for Stewards. We are just not getting the support that we need. I have a way that gets results and therefore I don't need much help. You need to have someone watching the over time hours because your terminal will surly go over hours to trigger a recall. If you need any help just P.M. me.

    Rugrunner,
If a Central Conference road man has to do his own drop/hook when there were city men or combo men available we get 3 times the time spent doing the drop/hook. If we can prove, through sign in/sign out sheets, a dog was in the yard at the time the set should have been hooked (at a dark terminal) we'll get 3x time spent. The only exception to this is if we are in the Southern Conference we can do our own drop/hook if there isn't a bid yard hostler on duty. I have no idea how this would work in Virginia but when the Company has to pay 3 times the rate enough they start to realize how it's cheaper to have the local man do the work.

Not sure if it changed in the last contract or not but if there are guys on layoff your BA should be able to filter the payout ( A days wages ) to the most senior guy on layoff..Trouble with that is it usually screws up your unemployment. Thats in the Central Pa contract. Next question should be was it an actual Road man or was it one of those utility men ? Weither you win or lost just make sure the BA has the results on paper so he can change the way its fought in the future.

I went into the 241 terminal a couple of years ago and there were 2 dock guys working (not sure if they were dock or city combos). The dispatcher gave me my trailer numbers and told me to do the switch. It was raining out and I was half po'd about having to do the work while their guys were on the dock. About 5 minutes later a central states driver arrived and was going to bed. The two dock guys literally dropped everything and ran out to drop him out so he could bobtail to the motel. That was the reason, central states drivers got so much $$$ for drops and hooks if anyone was available. And here I was doing my own work in the pouring rain. Jeeesh.

It was stopped in Cleveland. They can only drop and hook themselves when the terminal is dark. Any other time they have to wait or pay. This I have made clear to the company.
