Default YRC Worldwide's Woes a Benefit to Arkansas Best LTL Unit

    [QUOTE][Summary

ABF Freight System, the largest operating unit of Arkansas Best Corp., is negotiating with the Teamsters unit over wage and pension concessions. ABF, the nation's sixth-largest LTL company with $1.83 billion revenue last year, operates in the same troubled, unionized, long-haul LTL segment that YRC Worldwide. Financially ailing YRC recently obtained a five-year 15 percent wage cut as well as an 18-month pension freeze, savings that could amount to nearly $900 million a year for YRC./QUOTE]

It's estimated ABF could save close to $80 million a year with a 7.5 percent wage giveback, half what YRC workers have approved.
Could this pass a vote by ABF Teamsters? I think so.
Given the fact the average age of a Teamsters at ABF is around 60, the wage concession (especially if it's "only" half what YRC workers are enduring) might pass somewhat handily.
A harder sell would be the freeze on pension contributions. Most of the ABF workers I talk with are more concerned about security of their pensions than every last penny in their paychecks. If ABF were to just sell this as a temporary wage cut, I think it's a go. If it also includes a pension freeze, it might be a tougher sell.

Whatever the outcome, be clear on this. Those glorious, highly paid, secure unionized jobs in the LTL sector just got a little less glorious.

Unfortunately I think that this guy is correct. Whether it be a temporary wage giveback or some type of pension modifacation, something will have to give. My guess is that ABF would much rather see a permenent change in the pensions than a temporary reduction in wages.

I think most of us will agree that the YRC givebacks have made it difficult for ABF to compete. Just about all of their non union competition have already made cuts in their wage packages to offset this recession. That leaves only ABF paying the highest wage. And I heard that the only profitable business they have is the UPacks & those ugly Turnkeys.

Don't be fooled by the 2Q operating loss by ABF. They bought a 3pl company and paid millions to settle a law suit. And they paid millions for 2009 Tractors and Trailers. They have been passing through my barn everyday. I feel the IBT should ask us the TEAMSTERS at ABF as to what would or would not be negotiable. After all it is our futures. If Tyson Johnson and ABF just BUM RUSH us with a B*LLSH*T offer we should be MAD AS HELL! SO if you read this site Tyson do the right thing come to us FIRST. YOUR BROTHER ALWAYS!

I don't know who that John Shultz a###### has been talking to but most of the workers that I have been talking to wouldn't even hear of a wage decrease. Most will listen if some kind of pension buyout but that's it! They gave management bonuses through all the years that ABF ran at a 94 or 95 operating ratio. Now when they lose for two quarters they come to us for the money, I don't think so!!!!!!! GO GET THEM BONUSES BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As long as they can afford Browns and Indians season tickets, can afford to take management out on the company dime while attending said games, continue to ruthlessly try to deny rightfully earned unemployment benefits and have nearly half of the board on continued lay-off status then I say kiss my EVERLOVING WHITE ***!!!!!!SHUT THE DOORS!!!!!

Were are not afraid. This is why BA's that comes to our barns from other trucking companies don't get it. We are not better than any of our TEAMSTER BROTHERS we just do things differently. For instance in Cleveland Roadway would send in Road Drivers and just take over the city operation picking up and delivering their freight. yes the contract allows one stop in route but they would stop at a customers then go to the Cleveland terminal grab another dispatch and make another pick up on their way home to Copley. We at ABF Cleveland would not allow this to happen. They tried but we made sure it would not be in their best interest. We have paid many prices for our way of doing things but we are use to it. We will give ABF a HAND UP BUT WE WILL NOT GIVE THEM A HAND OUT! Our situation is different from that of YRC. ABF and the IBT had better think long and hard before asking for something.YOUR BROTHER ALWAYS!
