    Default Another losing quarter

UPDATE 2-Arkansas Best posts wider-than-expected loss, cuts div | Reuters

For the fourth quarter, the company reported net loss of $88.7 million, or $3.54 a share, compared with $11 million, or 44 cents a share, a year ago.

"Our 2010 operating performance will continue to be challenged until some positive change occurs such as a better freight economy, improved pricing or some other industry catalyst," Chief Executive Judy McReynolds said in a statement.

I wonder what that other industry catalyst could be?

Without much research, I would guess the failure of other carriers which would mean more available freight.

Just listened to the conference call and never heard the 88.7 million loss! But they did seem to paint a rosier picture than they have in a long time. Still, 3200 on lay off including my husband. Don't really know what to think of this report.

So is the loss for just the 4th qtr? If so, that is huge! I just found on the Journal of Commerce that in 1st qtr 2009 it was 29 million, 2nd qtr it was 15 million and 3rd qtr it was 14 million. 88.7 million is huge unless they are meaning that is for the whole year. Still not good but a lot better than for the qtr.

Sounds like it was just from ABF. I also found an article on redorbit.com (sorry, don't know how to post it on here) that the actual loss was 22.1 million and the rest was that Goodwill charge. Still not good as I just saw that Old Dominion made money for the year 2009. But they kept saying in the conference call how freight was up in December and is up so far in January which is unusual for this time of year. That can only be good!

You're welcome Bro. We all had to learn it at some point.....it's like backing a trailer.....you'll never get it right if you don't have the chance to try.

Thanks for that. I do that all the time in FB but didn't know you could do it from one website to another. That was a big help! p.s. no one will catch me learning to back up trailers! I leave that to my husband. lol
