    Default Laid off Mechanics?

Im looking to see if you brothers know of the other shops with any laid off mechanics. No one can give me insight at my terminal. I wonder if it was an attack at me or was this something they did across the board. They aren't working me so I may have to go work casual on the dock to get some insurance. Thanks your wondering brother.

At 042 our mechanics are not abf employees. They are a vendor. That way they do not have to pay abf wages and if they don't like the way any of them perform they just tell the vendor, who I am sure is ABF friendly, that they don't want him back on the property anymore and then the vendor simply tells the employee that he has no other work for him and lets him go. But they are unionized. A very good arrangement for all.

Hey Brother, listen to this. We hired a mechanic that had no mechanical back ground and evryone supported to give him a an opportunity- even though there we're more qualified applicants. After a few months this guy caught a terrible attitude, started bringing naked pictures of his wife to work on his phone, bad mouthed those people trying to help him and loaning him tools, snitched to management about others - you get the picture, he started abusing the rights of what the Union gave him. He to was married, 1 child and one on the way, yet in the end after he was laid-off everyone picked the slack ( he was lowest senority ) instead of slowing down. Sometimes waht seems like the worst is really the best thing to happen even though it may take years to realize this. It is amazing how people change when they are put ina position to manage themselves. I'll talk to my business agent and stewart and see what they will do to help you! Best of luck!!

So is the guy layed off because other Teamsters don't like him or because of union rules...such as maybe a decline in the amount of work? I'm not a mechanic so I don't know what is necessary by contract to lay guys off or bring them back. I'd hope it's because of union rules.

The layoff is due to personal reasons not by contract. But they are using the economy supposedly as the reason.

And the steward and BA support your layoff and give just cause so-to-speak for it? I mean they say the company has that right to lay you off.....or they say the other guys have issues with you so they support it because of that?
Or do they say anything? Did you ask them what's the deal?...If you are on the list you are on the list...but if not you may have bigger problems. I wouldn't let the other poster talk for you. I'd talk to them myself. First the steward and take it from there.

I don't understand how you get laid off for personal reasons, must have some goofy language in that contract. Just give the guy some time and he will hang himself since he doesn't sound that smart to start with

BA says he already spoke with you. Told you to get with "hoghead" aka Paul C. ops mngr and have your name and # on the list. To be called ahead of, or availability of dock only casuals and behind city laid-off. The last part, where exactly in order you are to be called ??? For sure it would be behind our "Driver Qualified" city laid off. Those dock only casuals are at best getting two days a week.
Was not able to find language specific to mechanics laid-off being eligible to be called for casual dock work. BA says its so, @ the $14.00 an hr rate. Casuals hired after 4/1/2008. gl
