    Default Casual employees being hired

Our operations manager here at 064 told us today that they have hired casuals off the street and that they will be working the weekends, even though we still have around 70 laid off dock employees.

this has been planned on for months so what if the concessions would of passed? He said that they can't hire back the laid off employees because there is not enough work through the week, just on the weekends

They can not do that, I would call the Hall and file the first time a guy under me worked!

I think what they do is work laid off guys say like 4 days and work casuals 2-4 days. Doesn't make since. Why they would rather keep guts laid off though. But I guess they want to pay casual rate. I wish the haul would stop this.

the way it was explained by our steward is that they have to offer all laid off dock, then offer laid off road workers work on that day, and then if the company still needs workers then they can resort to casuals...

doesnt seem right to me to work any casual w/o hiring back all of the laid off employees

I'd say the casual rate is one thing. Another is insurance...If they can get away with woking casuals and the full timers don't have enough days to get their insurance paid for they don't pay that either..and the guys may have to pay their own. The more casuals are allowed the more the chance that they can work the full timers just shy of paying their insurance. correct? If the work drops off.

Why are they only offering 4 punches to the laid off workers and not a fifth? There is no way they can pull a casual in without stepping on some toes.

If they get that fifth day, in alot of barns, the company will have to put them back on. It's not the same in all locals though. I'm in agreement with ttman on this one. IMO... they will be exploiting the terminals with the weakest barns. You would be surprised in what ABF gets away with at some locals! ABF doesn't give a damn about the people that work for them and they will always keep trying to get away with what they can. The locals are only as strong as their rank and file and vice versa. This says it all!
