Default ABF To Raise LTL Truck Rates 5.9 Percent

The good news just keeps on coming.....

ABF To Raise LTL Truck Rates 5.9 Percent

ABF To Raise LTL Truck Rates 5.9 Percent | Journal of Commerce

"Arkansas carrier follows YRC’s lead with early GRI; Con-way prefers ‘one-on-one’ approach
ABF Freight System said today it will raise its general tariff rates 5.9 percent, following an identical increase announced last week by competitor YRC.

The Fort Smith, Ark.-based trucker is the second less-than-truckload carrier to announce a general rate increase ahead of trucking’s peak shipping season.

Con-way Freight, one of the three largest LTL operators along with YRC and FedEx Freight, today said it would not implement an “out-of-cycle” GRI this fall.

Q&A: Port Truckers Face Future Without Carrier Chassis

“The reality is, the market still has overcapacity, not as much as it has had in the recent past, but there is still overcapacity,” spokesman Tom Nightingale said.

“We are selectively evaluating customers in areas where we have a tightening of capacity and dealing with those customers on a one-on-one basis,” he said.

ABF said in a statement it would revise its general rates Oct. 1. The impact on customers will vary depending on lane and types of shipment, ABF said."

They are just saying that ConWay is one of the 3 largest operators in LTL Freight, along with Fedex and YRC. Also, that unlike YRC, they will not seek the "out of cycle" GRI (General rate increase).

What I find interesting about this is that Conway is one of the companies suffering from the fact that they lowered their rates so low to put YRC out of business. They recently got rid of the president I believe it was because they are not it the best of shape. So why would they continue with this practice? I even heard them talking about it in a transporation conference call recently. They lost a lot of money. (I will search for the article on journal of commerce later)
