Default ABF Freight Announces Negotiations Start Date with Teamsters

    Here we go.
FORT SMITH, Ark., Nov. 13, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- ABF Freight®, the less-than-truckload carrier operated by ArcBest® (ARCB), announced that ABF and the Teamsters National Freight Industry Negotiating Committee (TNFINC) have agreed to exchange initial proposals on December 18 and 19, 2017, and begin negotiations on a new collective bargaining agreement the week of January 7, 2017.

TNFINC is the negotiating committee of local unions that are affiliated with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. ABF Freight is the largest subsidiary of ArcBest and was founded in 1923.

"We look forward to working with the Teamsters' leadership to reach a new collective bargaining agreement that appropriately reflects the competitive environment in which we operate," said ABF Freight President Tim Thorne.

The current collective bargaining agreement, known as the ABF National Master Freight Agreement, expires at midnight on March 31, 2018. It covers approximately 8,600 ABF Freight Teamster employees in various locations across the United States, including road drivers, city drivers, dockworkers, mechanics and clerical personnel.

Teamsters, ABF to Exchange Initial National Contract Proposals on December 18

The Teamsters National Freight Industry Negotiating Committee (TNFINC) is prepared to exchange initial national contract proposals with ABF on Monday, December 18, and TNFINC is ready to negotiate a contract that addresses members’ issues.

“We are prepared to negotiate a contract that will address our ABF members’ priorities,” said Ernie Soehl, Director of the Teamsters National Freight Division and Co-Chairman of TNFINC. “Our more than 8,000 members at ABF work hard every day to make the company successful and they deserve excellent pay and benefits and fair working conditions.”*

The current ABF—National Master Freight Agreement runs through March 31, 2018.

Following the initial contract proposal exchange, negotiations will commence in earnest on January 8.*

Reflecting the competitive environment, obviously that's the key. I don't want to be negative but I feel that ABF holds all the aces on this deal. How can ABF continue to compete with the extra costs while most all of the other major LTLs pay better while contributing much less or any pension and welfare costs?

ABF has been working on new contract proposals since the signing of the last contract. They have made strategic moves in their freight operations and are ready for a possible breakdown in negotiations and a strike. I'm totally against any job action or strike. IMO it would mean the end of a unionized ABF. I'm sure Ernie and TNFINC understand that they are negotiating from a position of weakness.

I can only hope that ABF brings a fair offer to the table. I can only hope that the break room s**t house lawyers can't talk my friends and co-workers at ABF into a strike. They have no strength or or power any more. I fear that ABF is ready to shut them down if they don't accept a bad contract.

We reap what we sow. Perhaps the lesson will actually teach the members that the IBT's leadership hasn't put forth enough effort to organize the non Union ltl carriers? Rather than the apathetic response on the general election, these members should have made their voices heard loud and clear by sending Hoffa a message. A message that would involve a moving company or two......

Lifer we have been losing power and going down hill for the past 25 years. I'm not sure who crazy and I disagreed with over on that other site about Hoffa giving UPSF/Overite a stand alone contract back in 2006. I think it was stldude or maybe even you but that's not important. My point is that most freight Teamsters trusted Hoffa back then and some even still do today. The IBT saw the end of the NMFA way back then and didn't have the guts to lay it out straight with us. You're right we do reap what we sow.

I don't want to derail this thread 2631 with this comment but when Hoffa/Hall drove right past the FedEx barn in Charlotte without stopping to encourage the new bargaining unit, they told the world how they felt about freight Teamsters. In case no one knew......

Something else I would like to add is ABF knows how to turn a profit. That is a point to argue when they come to the Teamsters with their hands out.

Just when I thought I was out someone pulls be back in. Now please explain to me how your opinion is more believable than that of the other break room s**t house lawyers

Come on Brother do you think abf can just walk away? They can't there are pension liabilities there are building taxes equipment payments and last but not least customers to service, We the Teamsters have always and still hold the company at bay. But you seem to suggest we want to break abf WE DO NOT!

Now you called Brothers s**t house lawyers and I must now ask you to post all the other trucking companies wages and benefit packages. If you can't then you would be guilty of being a s**t house lawyer. I sense you are afraid. Well how afraid will you be when and iif we keep bargaining from our knees and they pass contracts that takes away your pension and health benefits. Look no farther that the Iron Workers union in Cleveland Ohio they voted that all the retirees be cut to almost nothing while protecting the working Iron Workers pensions. So before you come on here slamming your own you had better look in the mirror and face the truth.

If we don't demand a good fair contract you will soon feel the affects,YOUR SHAKING HIS HEAD BROTHER ALWAYS!
