Default Republic Airways Teamsters Reach Tentative Agreement with Company

Today, the Teamsters Airline Division announced that it reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year contract with Republic Airways. The more than 2,200 pilots of Republic are represented by Teamsters Local 357 in Plainfield, Ind. and fly for the Republic sister-companies Chautauqua Airlines, Republic Airlines and Shuttle America.

The tentative agreement includes increases in pay that will place Republic pilots at or near the top of its regional airline peers. It also includes improvements in work rules, quality of life enhancements and more flexibility in scheduling as well as a significant signing bonus if ratified.

Default Teamsters Local 357: Pilots say Quality of Life/Pay, NOT Qualifications Causing Pilot

This week, Republic Airways Holdings (NASDAQ:RJET) announced that it would operate 27 fewer airplanes and expects to hire almost half the number of pilots anticipated in 2014 due a lack of candidates who meet new FAA rules mandating 1,500 hours of experience. However, the issues are more complex according to International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local No. 357 which represents the 3000+ pilots who fly for the Indianapolis-based airline.

"Regional carriers as a whole need to offer better pay and work rules to attract new pilots," said Local 357 President Craig Moffatt. "The lack of a competitive contract here at Republic contributes to poor quality of life with sub-standard pay to boot. This, in turn, leads qualified pilots to look elsewhere."

Default Teamsters, Other Unions Pledge Support to Regional Pilots

(Washington, D.C.) – The head of one of the largest Teamster pilot unions joined other union leaders across the industry in spearheading an agreement to set new standards for regional pilot contracts and to stand together during negotiations.

Craig Moffatt, Teamsters Local Union 357 Executive Board President, joined leaders for 12 other regional pilot unions in signing a joint agreement to work together against concessionary contracts and to stand up against ploys by corporate airline managements to play one group against another, a tactic commonly called ‘whipsawing’.

Earlier this month, Local 357 pilots who work for Indianapolis-based Republic Airways Holdings overwhelmingly rejected a four-year contract, with 85 percent of those who voted casting votes against. Republic Airways Holdings owns and operates three regional carriers—Chautauqua Airlines, Republic Airlines and Shuttle America Airlines which, in turn, fly for American, United, US Airways and Delta.

Teamsters Rally at Republic Airways Shareholders Meeting
Today, Republic Airways [NASDAQ: RJET] pilots and their families rallied outside the company's annual shareholders meeting in Indianapolis.

The pilots, members of Teamsters Local 357, are calling on shareholders to pressure Republic CEO Bryan Bedford to quickly reach an agreement that includes fair pay and benefits and reflects changes that have occurred in the airline industry since the last contract was signed in 2003. The pilots’ contract with Republic Airways Holdings has been amendable since 2007. There are more than 2,200 Teamster pilots at Republic.

The outdated agreement is affecting Republic’s ability to retain and hire pilots, leading to an increase in cancelled flights, and resulting in lost wages for pilots and lost revenue for the company. More than 1,600 flights operated by the airline were cancelled in May. Bedford has asked major airline partners to reduce their schedules during the peak summer travel season due to staffing issues.

Teamsters Local 357 Files Lawsuit Against Republic Airways
(PLAINFIELD, Ind.) – Today, Teamsters Local 357 in Plainfield, Ind., filed a lawsuit against Republic Airways [NASDAQ: RJET] for unilaterally changing pilots’ working conditions regarding “open time” flying without first agreeing with the union about those changes. More than 2,200 Republic pilots are members of Local 357 and have been seeking a fair contract from the company since 2007.

The lawsuit asserts that the company’s changes are unlawful alterations in the status quo and that they took place even while the items changed were the subject of ongoing bargaining between Local 357 and Republic. The purpose of the lawsuit is to compel Republic's compliance with its lawful duties under the Railway Labor Act (RLA), the federal law which governs labor relations in the airline industry.

Labor trouble with pilots deepens at Republic Airways
DALLAS (AP) — The Teamsters group representing pilots at Republic Airways is balking at allowing a vote on the company's contract offer, deepening the rift between labor and management at the regional airline.

The Indianapolis company's shares plunged 37 percent on Wednesday.

Republic has threatened to begin a restructuring process if pilots don't approve the proposal it offered last week, which it termed its last and best offer.

Jim Clark, the president of Teamsters Local 357, said the group's leaders opposed a ratification vote because Republic changed language that had been agreed upon during bargaining and added provisions that improperly limited communication between the union and its pilots. He said the Teamsters national organization could override the local and order a ratification vote.

Teamsters Request Mediation on Behalf of Republic Airways Flight Attendants

(WASHINGTON) – Yesterday the International Brotherhood of Teamsters requested that the National Mediation Board (NMB) oversee negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement covering over 2,000 flight attendants at Republic Airways.

“Our members are extraordinary aviation professionals responsible for ensuring exceptional safety and customer service for thousands of passengers each and every day,” said Captain David Bourne, Director of the Teamsters Airline Division. “We look forward to a productive conversation with the company and the NMB. I’m confident that all parties can work together to craft an agreement amenable to everyone involved.”
