Default Teamsters, Legislators Get Peek At Sikorsky's Plan To Stay Put In Stratford

STRATFORD, Conn. — Members of Teamsters Local 1150 got their first peek at a plan to keep Sikorsky Aircraft headquarters in Stratford Wednesday, a proposal that could go before a special session of the state legislature as early as Sept. 28.

Asked if Sikorsky would leave the state if the plan does not go through, Gov. Dannel Malloy said the plan’s failure is not an option.

“It’s gonna go through,” he told those gathered at a press conference outside the massive Main Street plant. “Let’s leave it at that.”

On Tuesday, Malloy announced the state has reached an agreement with aerospace giant Lockheed Martin to keep its Sikorsky Aircraft headquarters in Connecticut at least until 2032.

Default Union Asks Members For Pay Cut In Sikorsky Deal

Wow, this is terrible. These aircraft companies make so much money and now it is cut, cut, cut. And the union is going along with it. I am afraid this is what you guys might have to look forward to when contract time comes.

The Teamsters union, which represents nearly 4,000 Sikorsky workers, is asking its members to approve a 25 percent pay cut for workers hired beginning next year, part of a state deal to ensure that the company continues manufacturing next-generation U.S. Navy helicopters in Stratford until at least 2032.

Lockheed Martin Corp., the parent company of Sikorsky, sought $400 million in savings to makeits CH-53K heavy-lift helicopter. The General Assembly on Wednesday approved a package of up to $220 million in tax breaks and grants negotiated between the Bethesda, Md.-based defense contractor and the Malloy administration.
"While it is never easy to accept any concession, the leadership of the union is faced with the difficult choice of either recommending the company's proposal, which will ensure continued growth, or rejecting the proposal and watching the union membership decline over time," leaders of Local 1150 said.

Accepting the concessions "will secure 30 years of future work," the union said.

    Teamsters approve Sikorsky contract

STRATFORD — Members of Teamsters Local 1150 voted 2,104-140 to approve a proposal by Sikorsky Aircraft that will ensure 200 U.S. Navy helicopters will be built at the company’s site in Stratford.

The new contract would cut hourly rates by 25 percent for those joining the company after July 1, 2017, when the contract takes effect. Current employees will receive a $1,500 ratification bonus for approving the contract. Sunday’s vote allows Sikorsky to meet a deadline to inform the U.S. Navy where production of its CH-53K King Stallion helicopters would take place. One of the conditions of the contract is that the helicopters be built in Stratford.

According to a statement on the Local 1150 website, “a selection of any site other than the Stratford, CT, facility for the build of the CH-53K helicopter will result in this agreement becoming null and void.” The approval is the last piece of a three-pronged plan to keep Stratford-based Sikorsky in Connecticut until at least 2032. The first two steps were reviewing internal costs and striking a deal with the state for $220 million in incentives to stay.

Wow. 25% lower rate for new hires is big. I hate hearing that. I think the two-tiered wage system sucks. All it does is for the old timers say "screw the company, they can pay me the OT" and the newbie starve.

This whole thing really bugs me. While I am constantly posting strike news about other unions, here is the Teamster union asking their members to take more concessions and they did.

Malloy signs legislation that will keep Sikorsky's headquarters and thousands of jobs in the state
HARTFORD, CT - Governor Dannel P. Malloy on Monday held a ceremonial bill signing to commemorate the adoption of legislation that approves the state’s agreement with Lockheed Martin and will result in keeping Sikorsky Aircraft’s worldwide headquarters located in Stratford through at least 2032, where the company will retain and grow approximately 8,000 direct jobs. As part of the agreement, Sikorsky has also pledged to nearly double its spending of $350 million per year among in-state suppliers.

Today’s ceremony was held at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, which is one of several community colleges in the state that have Advanced Manufacturing Technology Programs, where Connecticut students are obtaining the skills that will prepare them for good-paying manufacturing jobs that companies like Sikorsky need to compete in a 21st Century economy.

“Connecticut is known internationally as a worldwide aerospace leader, and that is because of the strong number of aerospace manufacturers who call our state home in addition to the talented and robust workforce that provide these companies with a skilled aptitude that is second to none,” Governor Malloy said. “This is a bold, forward-thinking agreement that will not only impact thousands of jobs directly at Sikorsky’s worldwide headquarters, but also will have an impact on the hundreds of small businesses who employ thousands more throughout the state and serve as suppliers to the company. Competition in today’s worldwide economic climate is fierce, and Connecticut is showing that we remain a valued leader where businesses can maintain a competitive edge well into the future.”

“Thanks to a talented leadership team and a deeply committed workforce, Sikorsky has a long history of being among the most elite aircraft manufacturers in the world,” Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman said. “This legislation demonstrates our commitment to their continued success, and Connecticut’s continued economic growth. I applaud Governor Malloy’s leadership, the General Assembly, and the Sikorsky team on this important partnership.”

I can't help but to think ... what is in that legislation ? And what did they give Sikorsky and Lockheed Martin ?
While it's great they have committed to stay in the state and provide those jobs, I just can't wonder at what costs to the taxpayer ?
Too bad beanie can't chime in and tell us all that's wrong with this deal.

Sikorsky, Teamsters Agree To Tentative Labor Contract

The Teamsters union said Friday that it has negotiated a tentative agreement with Sikorsky Aircraft, but it did not release details.

Union members are set to meet Sunday for a ratification vote.

Rocco Calo, secretrary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 1150, did not respond to emails and phone calls seeking comment. Paul Jackson, a spokesman for Sikorsky, said he did not have a copy of the tentative agreement.

Lockheed Martin Corp., parent company of the helicopter maker, struck a deal with the Malloy administration in September 2016, committing Sikorsky in Stratford to making 200 U.S. Navy helicopters in Connecticut until at least 2032. The General Assembly ratified the deal, which provides up to $220 million in grants and tax breaks to Bethesda, Md.-based Lockheed Martin in exchange for the company meeting employment and in-state spending requirements.
