    Default My story. Please advise.

I want to be active in a union. That is my only career goal. That is really the only reason I got my CDL.
I am 44. I live in Asheville, NC. I am getting my class A next week. I have mortgage payments, so I need steady income. Since I had a lot of tough jobs early in my life, my back is sort of tricky. It goes out a couple times a year usually. I am thinking loading and unloading would be a serious problem for me. Tankers and dump-trailers would probably be fine. Office work would also be just fine. I also have a B.A. in mass communications. I have good work history. No felonies. No kids or wife. No real rush.
Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to ! My suggestion to you would be to visit your local Union hall. You say that you would be interested in belly dumps? Get in touch with the construction BA. He can advise you on what is best for your situation.

Thank you. Are you familiar with western NC? Unions are uncommon here. I am considering a situation where maybe I can rent a place during the workweek somewhere in NC or SC or east Tenn. Maybe even Ga. Anyone know of good regional companies with tanks and/or dump trailers that are Teamster?

It is like lifer said go to the local union halls in the area and they will be able to tell you what is available.. I believe you can go to Teamsters.com and look up the locals in the area you want to go to.. Good luck..

I am from NC and I would stay away from this 99% non union state for jobs. Our local is growing in the public sector but not anywhere else. No dump truck or tanker drivers are Teamsters in NC that I know of. The only choice that comes to mind now is YRC, Holland, ABF and Gilbarco, Miller Brewing, Johnson Controls. Gilbarco makes the gasoline pumps that we all use every day. Next time you get gas look for there name on the pump somewhee. It might say Veeder Root. Johnson Controls makes all kinds of automobile batteries.

Convenience Store and Service Station Equipment | Gilbarco Veeder-Root

Job search | Johnson Controls Inc.

or call Local 391 if you would like.

    Teamsters Local 391
    P.O. Box 35405
    Greensboro, North Carolina 27425

    Phone: 336-668-0441

    Hope this helps you.

I went to the Teamsters Web site, and I don't think it includes all the locals. For example, I don't see the Greensboro local on the map, only one here in Asheville (already checked with them) and one in Charlotte and none in South Carolina (which I find hard to believe.) I'd like to know where all the other locals are in NC, SC, Tenn. and Va. and at least Northwest Ga.

    Find Your Local | Teamsters

This is off the Teamster site.. Just go to the state you want and all the locals in that state should come up...

Look at the bottom of the main page on our site and you will find a list of each state and it's locals.

    Thanks, y'all.
I plan to call every local in the adjoining states and ask them what is available.
I really want to be an active union member.
It is my calling. About three years ago, we started a branch in Asheville of the Industrial Workers of the World. I wanted other people to take leading roles in our branch, but the project flopped in two years. The main reason, I believe, is because the IWW is so small. It is powerful in its ambitions and in its philosophy, but it is still only a little more than 2,000 members strong worldwide. My experience with them was disappointing. In order for a worldwide organization to have any real power, it needs a lot of members. I want to be one of those members more than anything else, and I will not be satisfied until I reach that goal.
