Default Ford to Begin Hiring at New Lower Wages

Ford to Begin Hiring at New Lower Wages

    By MATTHEW DOLAN

Ford Motor Co. will announce Tuesday it is adding a second shift at its Chicago assembly plant, creating 1,200 jobs and enabling the company for the first time to hire some new union workers at significantly reduced wages.

The contracts that Ford, General Motors Co. and Chrysler Group LLC signed in 2007 allow the auto makers to fill jobs vacated by older workers who leave or retire with new hires earning a little more than $14 an hour on average—about half what current workers received when they started. Newer workers also get reduced benefits.

The new "second tier" wage was a big concession for the United Auto Workers union, whose workers have enjoyed some of the highest manufacturing wages in the world. It agreed to accept reduced pay for newly hired workers in an effort to help make the Detroit Three more competitive with foreign car makers that use nonunion labor in their U.S. plants.

GM and Chrysler hired some workers at the reduced wage but laid off all or most of them when the companies slashed jobs as the recession and downturn in auto sales deepened. Ford never hired lower-wage union workers.

But with sales now showing signs of recovery, both the Big Three and foreign car makers are increasing production and adding factory jobs.

I say Good! The UAW needs to make MORE concessions. There is nothing wrong with a good wage for a days work, but come on. Thirty dollars an hour to screw in four bolts in a dash. Please. In a union setting that job should start at around twelve a hour and cap at maybe eighteen. And thats for a thirty year guy. There are so many different jobs in the that should be put on a graduating pay depending on; experience, senority and, education. Yes, I said education. Because so many of these yAhoo's at the end of the line who pull down over one-hundred thousand dollars a year don't even have highschool diploma's. I knew a guy at the Chrysler plant in Fenton Mo. who couldn't even read or wright! His old lady took his check, paid the bills, and drove him to work(dwi). All this guy did was drive a finished job off the end of the line out to the yard guys to drive away. Now the skilled trade guys like the pipefitters and electricians should make every bit of what they do because of hte requirements for the the job i.e. schooling and/or training. Just like carhaulers. We are skilled tradesman. We deserve every bit of what we make. Somebody needs to be telling all these non-union guys that. That they deserve a better wage, good retirement, collective bargaining, and good health care. Then we wouldn't have to take pay cuts to keep our traffic.

IMHO your thinking is flawed, due to the fact that everyone thinks someone else is overpaid. Many, many people think carhaulers or any Teamster or union member for that matter is overpaid.

Having said that do you feel that you and I should take a paycut?

    I don't think so.

As soon as the few good paying union jobs that are left, are gone due to outsourcing or thru pay and benefit reductions, there will be no standard being set that encourages employers to pay better wage and benefits.

It's no wonder that non union companies are able to grow when a Teamster Union Carhaul driver thinks like you. Why don't you just call United Road or Fleet Car or Supreme because with your thinking you would certainly fit right in!

Mudflap i understand what your saying but we were only getting 22 an hour for carhaul !!! Not saying i want someone to take a pay cut,but dont you think that for what it takes to be a carhauler and to make 6 or more an hour less is a little wrong? Are they doing anything to help us now while are jobs are going to non union companys? Do they care? They sure wanted our help when there jobs where on the line.

It is always good for new jobs to be created, but not at any less than the pay rate and benifits for comparative union jobs or former union jobs!

We don't have a flat rate. We get a raise every 6 months and we get overtime after 8 hours.

Actually I think you are trying to compare apples to oranges, being that we are Teamster Carhaulers and they are UAW.

Just because Allied took a paycut 2.5 years ago, do you think that all union carhaulers shoud have? I don't think so nor did that in fact happen.

Now some Teamster carhaul drivers think that UAW workers are over paid and should take a pay cut. Give me a freakin break, that makes no sense.

If this is how things should work then eventually everyone will be working for nothing, just like the employers want.

All union workers, need to support other union workers, as all union workers are involved in the same fight. The fight against corporate greed.

You and I volunteered years ago to become carhaulers, no one forced this upon us. To now say that UAW workers are overpaid and should take a pay cut sounds a little like jealousy to me. I'm quite sure if you had chosen to build cars instead of haul them that you wouldn't think you are overpaid.

There is little if any union solidarity and brotherhood amongst members of the same union and now we have animosity between the different unions. It is no wonder that Unions are in the shape they are today.

I sure am glad that most of my working career is behind me cause with the new MEEE STER attitude of many workers the future sure looks bleak!
