Default We need the Teamsters - Why?

    I'll tell you why

I started this thread so people can share their reasons why they think the Teamsters in Challenger is needed NOW.

    Be honest and clear.

I'll start by sharing my views.

I think that over the years Challenger has shifted from being a company that balanced profit with its employees well being to a profit machine. In my view it was about 5 to 7 years ago that the change started. Anyone that had started working at Challenger before that time would have to be fair and admit it was a great employer.

Ok, here are some of my concerns.

Any driver that has ever been in the Montreal area probably has experienced "yard 2000", I'll just call it a Challenger drop lot. Anyone that has been there knows the trailers are jammed against each other. I have pictures taken on many many occasions showing the trailer's less than 12 inches apart. WE have been complaining about this for years to management and pleading with them to work out the problem with the shunters over there. Nothing is changed.

A couple of months back a city driver hurt his arm trying to crank the dollies on 1 of these closely drop trailers. Of course, like most of us, we continue to work through the daily boo boos. When he did mention it to the city dispatcher, to try and solve the problem again, he was greeted with this reaction. City dispatcher with arms up in the air "great, another one". Referring to the fact that they were all ready 2 hurt city drivers. Absolutely ZERO concern 4 that city driver. Didn't ask if he was okay, couldn't care less.

My next issue. Every Challenger city driver with a new Volvo day cab knows 2 things. When it snows the wiper blades start to float and in a very very short period of time visibility out of the windshield is almost nil. They would also know that in the rain or wet snow conditions seeing anything out of the side windows is extremely difficult. This rain problem on the side windows is not from mirror blow back but from water streaming down off of the roof. This is due to the fact that there are no wheel covers on these trucks and no proper gutter system for the windows.

I know that a number of drivers have been bringing this to the attention of management in Quebec, Ontario and BC for approximately 9 months. If you think the problem has been resolved, you would be wrong.

I'll just start with these 2 problems. Trust me, far from the only 2 problems I have .

It's not only about money. It's also about safety in the workplace. Anyone that spends any time sucking in dirt at "yard 2000" knows it's also about health.

Health and Safety ... WHAT???? We have 1 of those committees in Dorval!!!! Why can't the problems get resolved then you ask? Well because the person on the committee representing drivers is head and shoulders up managements butts. His view on the side window problem is, slide the fifth wheel forward and cover the wheels with the trailer. Yah, we never never drive bobtail.

Save a few bucks and risk the lives of Challenger drivers and anyone around them. Challenger says they want to be responsible professional company. Then what's with all of the yes men?

Ok it's not only about money BUT, last meeting, jjust before the city vote one of the city driver big time detractors, told us about the collective aggreement from another company.
He had a friend who works for Midland transport.

I say it is about time that the Teamster go after truckload carriers! The drivers/employees are always getting shafted by these companies. A man needs a job that pays a living wage not slavery that doesn't

    GOOD LUCK AND GOD SPEED

    Thanks for that nickel

That's all we're saying ... a fair wage for a days work. You would think that it's not even something you have to fight for.

Of course if somebody "important" , not a driver, would complain then maybe something would get done about it.

Well say Nickelplaterick, what is happening now at challenger should also happen on both side of the border with the truckload carriers. When we will have been done at challenger,it will have a dominos effect in the industries, as the drivers will see that YES it can be done an the world will not fall appart.
