Union: IBM Cuts 1,200 Workers

IBM on Monday cut more than 1,200 jobs in North America, according to a labor union that’s attempting to represent Big Blue employees.

"It's clear IBM is moving work offshore at a record rate," Lee Conrad, national field coordinator ofAlliance@IBM, told the News & Observer in North Carolina’s Research Triangle.

IBM employees have never been immune to the threat of cuts. Alliance@IBM – the Communications Workers of America’s national organizing campaign – says the company laid off more than 10,000 people last year alone as it outsourced a lot of jobs overseas. It turns out the move was good for business as the computer giant reported a $13.4 billion profit, a record for the company – not bad considering the lousy economy.

IBM Fires About 2,400 Employees, Labor Group Says (Update3)

March 2 (Bloomberg) -- International Business Machines Corp., the world’s largest computer-services provider, fired about 2,400 workers, mostly in the U.S., according to an employee advocacy group.

"“We’re getting reports from employees that they’re training the overseas replacements as they are getting cut,” Conrad said today in a phone interview. IBM fired 10,400 people in the U.S. and Canada last year, he said."
