Default Shippers may raise fuel prices

The timing, some economists say, could not be worse. Consumers are already paying steeper prices at the gas pump and may see prices climb in stores if diesel prices remain high. American manufacturers, meanwhile, are struggling to get back on their feet

I know I harp on the quality of bad press items, but never knew shippers set the price of fuel.

Just my comment on the article I'm grouchy today it seems. Been harassing Dayton and other bid journals who think copy and paste is journalism

Grouchy, maybe, maybe not. But you're right about the so-called journalists.

Hehe well my ire wasn't aimed at you still wonder why a shipper would raise cost prior to any freight rates increase. Other than all out greed, the " have the added cost already in the system" seems a bit of a stretch as fuel cost change and so will fuel surcharge amounts.

They don't; the government tells them they can enact a fuel surcharge when diesel goes over a certain amount. The fuel surcharges are based on 6mpg, so anything a driver gets over 6mpg is money in his pocket (in the O.O.'s case of course.) The greedy company in most cases now. This seems to me like a small slice of regulation, I may add.

That picture was taken after Jimmy P. informed him he wasn't going to eat his broccoli.

Last week, Union Pacific said in its report on the first quarter that it paid average diesel fuel prices of $2.88 a gallon, up 33 percent from the same period in 2010. The higher costs — the company said it paid about $200 million more for fuel in the quarter than the same period in 2010 — sliced 8 cents off the company’s $1.29 in earnings per share. Even so, the earnings were the company’s highest for any first quarter in its history.
Let's not lose sight of the bottom line here, cause if they lost 50 cents for the first quarter, they wouldn't let you forget it.
