Default FBI Links Serial Killers and Interstates

This story caught my attention since I live very near interstate 40 and truck stops.

FBI agents, along with local agencies, linked a bunch of the cases and arrested long-haul trucker John Williams and his girlfriend, Rachel Cumberland, for about 20 of the murders. The FBI then realized cases not obviously related might be, so it created the database and opened it up to police and sheriff's departments across the country.

The sick feeling I have right now would make anyone run and hide.

The FBI has known and kept track of the killers that use the interstates since as early as 1975. I was going for a doctorate in criminal psychology in 1987 and read alot on the FBI group that tracked and researched serial killers. It's partly the reason I even got into trucking.

And still keep a loaded gun near where I sleep. And yes it is a tad paranoid.

Criminal psychology, huh? Absolutely fascinating! I can sit here and devour your stories all day.

I think they're on your trail.....

"Harrigan said the FBI often looks at truck drivers or transients because they've been known to commit crimes of opportunity. The victims are usually drug users, prostitutes or hitchhikers."

The most talked about when I was studying was called " dr. Feelgood"

Not much was ever found out about him but he was mostly in the mid west. He only ever killed truckstop prostitutes so many of his crime will never even be known. But in 1990 we did hundred of interviews with " ladies" and found that for about the past 5-10 years alot of them went missing. Another one never had a given name other than the I-70 killer. He seemed to only run on i70 but at that time the local "law" didn't care what happened in the truckstops. I still read everything I can get but the crimes still go with little notice. Some trucker found 2 dead prostitutes in effingham Illinois a few years ago, it got little press and was forgotten pretty quickly. It's part of truckings deregulation dirty little secrets, we now get child slavery and other horrific crimes . The rise of owner operators with no real regulation as where they can go scares the hell out of me when one of my family wants to make a long trip on the highways alone. One of my professors even said I was looking at basically the part of crime that no one can really cover and now I think he was right.

You got me going. Crime stories are my cup of tea. Try reading Stephen King's "Full Dark, No Stars" if you get a chance.

Here's what I found on the I70 killer. And don't read it at night...especially alone in the cab.

"The stretch of I-70 from Utah to Maryland has been said to be more trouble than what it was worth.

The highway might connect some of the major cities, but there are sinister acts that happen on the highway. The highway became known as America's Sewer Pipe in 1985 when Daniel Remeta made his way down I-70.

Daniel Remeta and Lisa Dunn met and became close when she was 18-years-old and he was 27-years-old. Remeta took control of her mind as did Mark Walter another 18-year-old. Neither Walter nor Dunn had ever been in trouble and were considered good kids with bright futures. The three set out for Florida in 1984. Dunn had her fathers .357 handgun, although how Dunn came into possession of the gun varies when Dunn gives the story, he wasn't planning a friendly trip to Florida with the gun."

Had I followed through with the police academy, I'd be doing some pretty cool detective work now. No regrets. Now I just read the stories.

I stayed in trucking for " research" but found I enjoy driving way more than paperwork, so 20 years later I'm glad I did. I have been kicking the idea around about writing a book about these crimes. Hope to start organizing articles as alot of this info is trashed and circle filed

This is a story that came out a couple of years ago here in NM. At one time the police wondered if it could be a truck driver due to the close proximity to I-40 and the truck stops in Albuquerque. Again, all prostitutes.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- It's been more than a year and a half since the remains of 11 women and a fetus were found on Albuquerque's West Mesa, but police have made no arrests in the case.

In February 2009, a woman found a human bone while walking her dog. It was the first clue in the soon-to-be massive investigation

I have to say, I spend so much time alone, live in a very rural area, and having a teenaged daughter, I do not watch crime shows, even Americas Most Wanted anymore. It scares me half to death to see the weirdos that are lurking around everywhere!!
