Default Tribe sues brewers, stores over liquor problems

I once read an article in National Geographic that Native Americans and Japanese cannot metabolize alcohol the way we can. That it is a poison to their systems and that is why the high rate of alcoholism amongst Natives. Wonder if that explains why the Irish like it so much too?

The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota said it is demanding $500 million in damages for the cost of health care, social services and child rehabilitation caused by chronic alcoholism on the reservation, where alcohol is banned.

    Alcoholism on Indian Reservations

However, for Native people, drinking alcohol, can lead to alcohol poisoning because of a genetic inability to metabolize alcohol like other races.

Each of us has enzymes that help us to metabolize alcohol. White people, drinking a moderate amount of liquor, can metabolize it quickly. Native American's, drinking the same amount of alcohol, may metabolize it slower. Rates of metabolism are different among tribes because of biological differences. When someone is alcohol intolerant, they become intoxicated quickly

Leaders of the tribe blame the Whiteclay businesses for bootlegging on the reservation.
They aren't bootlegging if they are selling where it is legal.

I wonder if the store could legally refuse to sell the beer to indians? Wouldn't that be discrimination?

Seems to me it would be illegal. Alcohol is not allowed on the reservations here either. The Indian Casinos do not serve it. But if they go off the reservation, you can't stop them from buying it. It is pretty sad in Gallup because the alcoholism is rampant.
