Default Medicaid Funds 70% Of Births In N.M.

I am speechless! But it does make sense. So many people live in such isolated areas nowhere near any jobs. If you don't have money, you cannot pay for a pregnancy. And I also think that is what leads to the high teenage pregnancy rate. Isolation, maybe lack of education. My daughter tells me there is a mentality out there with some girls that they just want a baby. They do not even think about their future or the consequences of such a decision.

Seems like the very things that make New Mexico so beautiful are the very things that cause so many bad statistics.

Medicaid pays for about seven in 10 of all births in New Mexico.

Of the 27,795 babies born in New Mexico in 2010, 19,863 births – or 71 percent – were paid for by the state and federally funded health insurance program for the poor, according to a recent analysis by the state Legislative Finance Committee.

“Being born on Medicaid is related to poverty,” said Peter Winograd, director of the Center for Education Policy Research at the University of New Mexico.

And the large number of Medicaid births reflects a stew of problems in New Mexico, such as high rates of unemployment, drug use, school dropout and teen pregnancy, which remains the second highest in the nation, he said.

“I think it’s a reflection of the demographic reality of New Mexico,” Winograd said. “Think about an uneducated population continuing to grow and what does that do for our economic viability.”

I think a license should be required to have kids,....

Make them get educated so they make better decisions,......

Why should the taxpayers keep paying for other peoples mistakes??

I can see where your coming from but then isn't that more government control? The control you don't want as far as gun ownership? I realize one cost taxpayer money, the other does not but like the gun control issue, the lottery ticket issue and so on, it is more government control and I just don't think responsible people should have to have a license to have a baby. Unfortunately, I think this starts at home! I mean, schools are educating kids on sex, giving them free birth control, planned parenthood gives free birth control and yet it seems to do not much good. I think if parents also talk to their kids about the ramifications of unplanned pregnancy, maybe it would make a difference. I am not blaming parents for all teen pregnancies because I know that in some instances, kids will do what they want no matter what. But we do have a very high teen pregnancy rate here. Something has to be causing that. And it is not lack of sex education on public schools part. I do know that teaching abstinence in just about all the church denominations here is a big thing. I don't think that is working.

And how would you police whether someone is licensed to make a baby? Put cameras in their bedrooms or back seats of cars?

Good question (I had to look that term up ). The illegal population has definitely increased in NM in the 15 years I have been here. When I first moved here, you rarely saw Spanish speaking immigrants here. How do I know Spanish speaking immigrants from Spanish speaking locals? Easy. They sound different and locals can also speak English and prefer to.
