Default Almost 99 percent of NM in 'Severe Drought'

The title of this article is misleading. We have been in "exceptional" drought for months. If you look at the map, you will see what I mean. Last night we had a dust storm come through that left a layer of dirt all over my house. Normally such winds would be accompanied by heavy rain as we approach our monsoon season. Some small areas did get rain but not us. I live in the big square county in the center of the map (next to the two small counties to the left). My county is partly high prairie and partly heavily wooded such as where I live. Very scary no matter where you live now. If a fire hits and you live on the prairie, it will be a fast moving grass fire, and if a fire hits where I live (and the experts are saying it is a "when but not if" situation) it will be a fast moving forest fire.

I thought of you Thursday night , we had dry thunder and lightning for about 1 hour , then all of a sudden , it started pouring it got so bad so fast that within 1 hour of the down pour the roads were getting flooded , I seen sewers and manhole covers spitting out water , that how much came down and the whole time I said this is what ABFWIFE needs and we are tired of all the rain , I wish you would of got this storm it would of helped you out , and now we have been getting rain so much the local news just gave a report that we can expect pop up showers for the next 7 to 10 days because that's the pattern we are in , I hope you get rain real soon and everything works out for you and your community. Be Safe.....

That is the way our monsoon season used to be for us. Something us New Mexicans anxiously anticipate every summer. We love snow and rain here. I was in a movie theater in ABQ several summers ago before the drought became so persistent. It started raining so hard, water rose about half way up the glass doors and then started pouring into the theater. We all had to be evacuated and that in itself was really scary because the lightning was horrible and we were all trying to get to our cars. I have pictures of waterfalls rushing down the hill in my backyard. It has washed out my driveway several times. That is typical for us during the summer and I am praying for it. We have had our monsoons the last two years while the drought has gotten so severe but even the monsoons have dwindled to scattered storms here and there instead of widespread over the whole state.
