This is exactly why I have concerns about this fracking business. Where are the agencies that are supposed to keep an eye out for things like this?
At a deserted gas station in a remote North Dakota town, local officials recently found the latest example of the shale-oil boom's unintended consequences: hundreds of garbage bags filled with mildly radioactive waste.
Last week, the state reacted by passing new regulations -- effective June 1 -- forcing the shale-oil industry to use leak-proof containers to temporarily store the socks at well sites.

"This is a response to the ongoing problem of illegal dumping of filter socks," said Lynn Helms, director of the state department of mineral resources.
