    Default The Tiny House

I watched this on Netflix last night. I know we have had posts on this site about this concept in the past. I found this really fascinating and can totally relate to where these people are coming from. When husband and I decided to leave the rat race, this is pretty much the kind of lifestyle we chose. His family thought we were nuts (I think they still do). We live in a place that is less than 800 square ft. Sure, it is crowded at times but the funny part of this is that about 12 years ago we bought a brand new spacious home and my son rented our mobile home. We were miserable. We lasted one year in the new house. Son wanted back in CA so it worked out perfectly for all of us. These people have downsized more than us but I think it really puts in to perspective what life should be about. If all we do is work, work, work to pay for the "stuff" we have, that is not really living.

After many years of dramatically increasing home size in America - from an average of 983 square feet in the 1950s up to 2300 square feet in the 2000s, despite declining household sizes - the trend appears finally to be going in the other direction. The real estate research firm Trulia found in 2010, for example, that the median "ideal home size" for Americans had declined to around 2100 square feet. More than one-third of survey respondents reported that their ideal preference was lower than 2000 square feet.

I call all those homes around here "mini mansions", all with opulent landscaping, pools and high property taxes.
How much can one family use ?
My house, the one I have been in for 37 years, is 1250 square feet.
More then enough to clean and take care of.

Uh oh !! I must live in a mansion.. 2800 plus an oversized garage .. But after raising four kids [one still here] it is time to fix her up and hang the "for sale" sign on it,just can't tell him about it since he will be doing the work.. But I will say after all these years of having the extra room I did get use to it..only bad thing is with all the extra room you tend to hold on to more and more stuff... Yard sale anyone??

I grew up in two bedroom, 1 baths homes until I was in high school and by then there were four of us kids. Mom and step dad bought a 4 bedroom, 2 bath. I lived in bigger houses as a younger woman, owned quite a large one at one time (a little over 1400 sq ft lol) but I will say, having a smaller house does force you to not hold onto a lot of crap. The local thrift store is my best friend. I will admit though there are days I would give anything for one more room.
