A little off topic but a nice video of a vet in traffic court.

This story highlights the unequal access to Veterans healthcare across the United States.

This veteran population map shows VA healthcare access is wildly unequal throughout the U.S.
Unequal access to Veterans Affairs healthcare facilities has long been a topic of concern for veterans and their advocates, and debate over how to deal with the issue has increased in recent years as VA facilities have struggled to keep pace with an influx of service members whose tours of duty in Iraq or Afghanistan have left them in need of care.
At the heart of the issue is the time it takes for patients to travel from their homes to a VA facility. In January, the Trump administration proposed new rules that would allow veterans who live as close as 30 minutes from a facility to opt instead for private care—a controversial policy that some critics say will have a corrosive effect on the VA healthcare system as money is diverted into the private sector, the New York Times reports. The proposed plan is expected to take effect this summer.
Regardless of where you stand on the new plan, it’s clear that access to VA facilities is wildly uneven throughout the country, and that veterans in larger states, particularly in the Western half of the country, often carry a burden of longer-than-average transportation times.

Could this be true ? I noticed other news stories mentioned that this might have happened before.

Whistleblower says there’s a secret VA wait list for care. The department says that’s not true
Jereme P. Whiteman rose quickly through the Department of Veterans Affairs, reaching the top grade on the main employee classification scale in only seven years.
But his future within VA appears stymied. He’s become a rebel within the department’s establishment — a whistleblower who says the scandals that shamed the department during the Obama administration haven’t stopped.
Whiteman, VA’s national director of clinic practice management and a former Marine, has accused the department under President Trump of having “a secret VA wait list” for veterans seeking health care.
It’s starkly reminiscent of the tsunami-level scandal that broke in 2014 over the coverup of long patient wait times. That coverup included falsifying records to indicate the wait for medical service was shorter than it really was. Congress went ballistic, and the controversy drove then-VA Secretary Eric Shinseki, a former Army general and chief of staff, from office.

    Expanding access for Veterans care.

Veterans to get expanded access to private doctors at VA expense starting Thursday
WASHINGTON – Veterans will have expanded access to medical care outside Department of Veterans Affairs facilities beginning Thursday under a law signed by President Donald Trump last year and touted as a major achievement by Trump on the campaign trail.
Rules established under the law and published Wednesday in the Federal Register say the VA will pay for veterans to see non-VA doctors if they have to wait longer than 20 days or drive more than 30 minutes for primary or mental healthcare at a VA facility.
For specialty care, they can see private doctors at VA expense if they have to wait longer than 28 days or drive more than an hour to see a VA provider.
Previously, veterans who had to drive more than 40 miles or wait longer than 30 days could choose to see a private doctor paid for by the VA.
The rules going into effect Thursday also allow veterans to go to non-VA urgent care clinics at VA expense without prior approval, though they may have to pay a co-payment.

The VA has now allows visits to certain "Urgent Care" facility's around the country.

The VA will now let you go to civilian urgent care centers
As of June 6, 2019, the VA offers medical care to eligible veterans at selected civilian urgent care facilities nationwide.
This is an expansion of the VA's Mission Act, which itself was an expansion of the Veterans Choice Act. The Choice Act was passed in 2014 as the result of highly publicized problems with veterans not being able to get appointments at VA hospitals in a timely manner.
Under this new expanded program, veterans are eligible to get limited urgent care from civilian doctors regardless of how close they are to a VA facility.
You should contact your local medical office to check your eligibility. Or you can call (866) 606-8198. You can also find civilian community-care locations near you at https://www.va.gov/find-locations/.

Thanks fxstc07 I just learned something. I clicked on the link locator and found that CVS Minute Clinics are a part of the program in my area. I won't have a need for them since I have Medicare. This will be good for younger vets without insurance who rely on the VA for their health care.

MinuteClinics are staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants who specialize in family health care, and are trained to diagnose, treat, and write prescriptions for minor acute illnesses such as strep throat and ear, eye, sinus, bladder, skin, and lung infections. Vaccinations, such as influenza, tetanus-pertussis, pneumovax, and Hepatitis A & B are available at all locations. Services offered by MinuteClinics include sports and camp physicals, Department of Transportation physicals, sexual transmitted disease testing and treatment, contraception services, smoking cessation, and TB testing. Routine lab tests, instant results, and education are available for those with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or asthma.

This article concerns the collective bargaining between the union and the VA.

VA’s collective bargaining proposals spark concern from nearly 130 lawmakers
More than 125 lawmakers are urging the Department of Veterans Affairs to rethink its approach to collective bargaining with the American Federation of Government Employees.
A series of new bargaining proposals, which VA released to both AFGE and the public last month, has sparked concern among a bipartisan group of 128 House members.
If enacted, VA’s proposals would cut official time, ban AFGE’s use of departmental office space and government supplies and end labor management working groups. VA’s proposals would also eliminate more than two dozen articles of the department’s existing contract with AFGE, meaning the union can’t bargain over telework, relocations, promotions and other topics.
Some of VA’s proposals resemble provisions in President Donald Trump’s three workforce executive orders, which he signed back in May 2018 and a federal district court invalidated later last August. The Trump administration is appealing the court’s decision.
VA, of course, isn’t the only major agency to suggest bargaining proposals that resemble provisions in the President’s workforce executive orders. The Department of Health and Human Services, after receiving a decision from the Federal Service Impasses Panel, is implementing new bargaining articles that resemble, in part, pieces of the President’s EOs. The National Treasury Employees Union has refused to recognize the panel’s decision as a new, comprehensive collective bargaining agreement.
The Social Security Administration recently received a similar decision from the impasses panel.
