Default Will the VA privatize ?

Since we have more then a few members that are Veterans, I thought it would be appropriate to start a thread over this new issue of private versus government controlled medical care.
Some feel that is the goal of the present administration to privatize. Others don't see it that way.
Let's post articles and information here.
Trump's new appointee to head the Department of Veterans Affairs, Rear Admiral Ronny L. Jackson, will likely do little to oppose the privatization of veterans' health care Trump’s new appointees to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will certainly not oppose—and may actively promote—the dismantling of the agency. Rick Weidman, executive director for policy and legislative affairs for the Vietnam Veterans of America, told the Prospect. “They want to privatize the VA at any cost to veterans.”
“Military medicine,” Weidman reminds us, “is about getting people back online as quickly as possible—not managing patients, like veterans, who have multiple, complex chronic conditions.” Since 2006, when Jackson began serving as a physician in the White House, his patients have largely been well-heeled, upper-middle-class civilians.
“I can’t think of a more perfect puppet,” another veterans’ advocate, who preferred to remain anonymous, told the Prospect. And indeed, Jackson’s claim to fame is his controversial report on Trump’s health, in which he minimized the impact of the president’s weight, lack of exercise, and poor diet. He’s now more likely to put the VA on starvation rations, at Trump’s behest, than put the president on a much-needed diet.

This is from a post on Facebook from a lawyers firm that follows what is going on with the VA.

Can the Department of Veterans Affairs be saved? - Chicago Tribune

The travesty at our veterans hospitals is an enduring national disgrace. In the past five years alone, a number of deplorable scandals have dishonored the system. Houston-area Veterans Affairs facilities improperly manipulated more than 200 wait times for veterans looking to schedule medical appointments at VA clinics. By shifting the blame for cancellations from the VA staff to patients, employees made it appear that waiting times for clinic visits were shorter than they really were. Veterans often waited an average of nearly three months for rescheduled appointments

Meanwhile, VA employees in Phoenix entered false dates into the appointment system, so veterans waited far longer than the recorded waiting times — with some patients dying before they could see a doctor. That scandal cost then-VA Secretary Eric Shinseki his position

Okay I know where your coming from as there are many rumors stating Trump wants to privatize the VA. Now I will state this again.. The Veteran comes first and I don't care where or who provides the service. My older brother has gotten life saving services outside of the VA because the VA couldn't provide the service he needed in a timely manner. Completely paid for by the VA. Now if this is privatizing then so be it. Again the veteran deserves the best care in a timely manner.

I don't think anybody would suggest that all Veterans shouldn't get the best available healthcare, at any cost.
    That isn't the issue.

The issue is simply privatization has never proved to be the best approach to any service, IMO. The only argument I have is that someone else will step in to make money, anyway they can. If that means to cut corners for services rendered, then so be it.
Our current system of healthcare is evidence of that. If the insurance company says "no" to a procedure or service, good luck getting it without a fight. Is that what we want for our military members who served and gave more then expected ?

Here is a page from the VA and the statement they issued on privatization. Dated April 5, 2018
"If we’re trying to privatize, we’re not doing a very good job,"..."We’ve gone from 250,000 employees in the VA in 2009 to 370,000 employees, and we’ve gone from a $93.5 billion budget to what the president’s asked this year is $198 billion. It sounds like we’ve been an utter failure if we’re trying to privatize." – House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Chairman Phil Roe

As I read that a chill came over me and a tear welled in my eye. I knew what I wanted to write but I can't. Wizard I appreciate your sharing this and will respect your privacy and not go further into your loss.

The VA today is very different that it was 50 years ago. There weren't any parades or welcome home for the returning veteran. There wasn't any understanding or treatment for PTSD or TBI. Suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, failed marriage, crime and incarceration were all too common...........Today's veteran would be better served by a continued independently run VA rather than a voucher type privatized medical system.

Thank You 2631...I knew YOU would understand...You've always been a 'Class Act' in a Thousand different Ways...Thank You again...

This discussion should never be about privatizing but about improving on the current system. When the military budget is being discussed,Veterans should be included as the NUMBER ONE Priority, the first item to be discussed and adequately funded before ANY OTHER items are even considered...Without the Veterans there wouldn't be anything left to discuss...Those who served on to whatever the latest conflict was/is need the FULL Support of the Government behind them all the way...They deserve Health Care...Job Opportunities...Training...Decent Housing...and access to all Social Services...They are not something to be discarded like yesterday's garbage and making the VA a for PROFIT outfit would be doing just that...Corporate America and their Sycophant Puppet Politicians are ALWAYS trying to cut corners on the BACKS of those who Served this Country and instead...Should offer them DIGNITY...HONOR...and RESPECT by making sure their 'SACRIFICES' were appreciated to the Fullest by making them the...''NUMBER ONE PRIORITY''.

Veterans should get the same top notch GOLD STAR Healthcare that is given to those CROOKS and COWARDS in the House and Senate!!!!

I'm not sure if read of my father's experience with the VA a few years ago. The care he received was better than any private hospital I've seen. It made me wonder why every state doesn't have the same quality care.
