Default Union Begins Coca-Cola Negotiations, Trades Initial Contract Proposals

The Teamsters Local 727 Coca-Cola Bargaining Committee met with Coca-Cola representatives on October 28 to kick off new contract negotiations. Both the union and management traded initial, non-economic contract proposals.

Economic proposals for wages, pensions and health and welfare will be forthcoming.
“The union is not interested in any proposal that would diminish the rights our members already have, limit their opportunities to work fair schedules or weaken their benefits,” said John Coli Jr., President of Local 727. “For our Coca-Cola members, Local 727 wants to move the ball down the field. The Bargaining Committee has submitted a proposal that is thorough and well thought out. We’re determined to strengthen members’ rights and advantages, which is precisely what we’ll be fighting for.”

Bargaining continued for a third day on Monday, November 2, as the Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee resubmitted its non-economic proposals to Great Lake Coca-Cola Distribution management.

Although GLCCD representatives have not yet offered any substantive movement on initial proposals, the union is making significant organizational progress throughout negotiations. The company is proposing two separate, yet nearly identical agreements for Teamster route drivers and bulk drivers and for warehouse workers at facilities in Chicago and Alsip.

The union is recommending merging the bargaining units to negotiate one strong, fair contract for all members. On Monday, the Bargaining Committee analyzed company proposals and organized all outstanding provisions to maintain its focus on reaching a single agreement.

Teamsters Address Outstanding Contract Proposals With Coke, Company Cuts Meeting Short
Even before contract negotiations resumed on Thursday, November 5, Coca-Cola representatives made it clear to Teamsters Local 727 they had to cut the day short.

Management kicked off the morning by addressing just one lone provision among its dense and varied contract proposals. The company initially offered no movement or other specifics regarding the remaining proposals on the table.

Following hours of negotiations on Wednesday, November 4, the Local 727 Bargaining Committee and union attorneys reorganized all outstanding proposals in a single report to streamline future talks.

Local 727 Beverage Members Stand Together for Strong Contracts in Niles, Alsip
Teamsters Local 727 members at Coca-Cola Refreshments and Reyes/Great Lakes Coca-Cola Distribution wore their unity loud and proud on Tuesday, November 17, as negotiations continued for new contracts with both companies.

Hundreds of members sported red Teamster T-shirts as they started their shifts in beverage production and warehouse facilities in Chicago, Niles and Alsip, Ill. Local 727 also brought food and refreshments to members in Niles and Alsip, rallying together in support of new agreements with Teamsters and representatives from local union affiliates of Teamsters Joint Council 25.

“With members working today in bright red union apparel, we send an undeniable message to employers that the Teamsters are strong, we’re unified and we don’t back down,” said John Coli, Jr., President of Local 727. “Local 727 appreciates the support of our brothers and sisters across Illinois for standing shoulder-to-shoulder with our members in the beverage industry. Together we can secure fair contracts that honor the labor our members deliver day in and day out.”

    Why Warren Buffett Loves Coca-Cola

Warren Buffett is Coca-Cola's (NYSE: KO ) biggest shareholder. Berkshire Hathaway owns 400 million shares of the soft drink giant, a stake worth nearly $16.2 billion.

Coca-Cola Stubbornly Sticks to Unreasonable Proposals, Stalls With One Day Left to Negotiate
For the seventh consecutive bargaining session, Coca-Cola has wasted the time of the Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee by refusing to budge from its unreasonable contract proposals.

During another marathon 13-hour meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 18, Local 727 watched as management sat on its hands and resubmitted contract offers that members have explicitly made clear are unpalatable.

Despite the union’s best efforts to introduce equitable proposals that afford workers strong, yet standard workplace protections, Coca-Cola has been altogether unwilling to move on important issues.

“The proposals that are most important to its own employees are the ones Coca-Cola rejects, hour-after-hour,” said John Coli Jr., President of Local 727. “The only thing management is willing to move on is seeing how much time they can possibly waste. The company is trying hard to force members to back away from the rights they deserve.”

Teamsters Local 727 Files Unfair Labor Practices Against Coca-Cola Refreshments
(CHICAGO) - Teamsters Local 727 filed numerous unfair labor practice charges today against Coca-Cola Refreshments, a subsidiary of Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), that include bargaining in bad faith, intimidation of workers with baseball bats and unilaterally changing contract terms and working conditions.

Local 727 represents more than 300 warehouse and production workers and transport drivers at Coca-Cola Refreshments facilities in Niles and Alsip, Ill. The union and the company have met for nine bargaining sessions since October to try to come to terms on a new contract. Without offering reasonable proposals, Coca-Cola Refreshments management has repeatedly delayed negotiations and ignored information requests as the current Teamster contract nears expiration on December 1.

Coke is having problems like McDonald's is..people are eating healthy, the organic and gmo free fad is going strong. Coke and McDonalds are not smart choices. I don't drink coke or eat McDonald's but I will never give up baked macaroni and cheese or Walmart candy. Coke won't be generous. They will block the ball from moving downfield

If these charges hold water, the ball will be kicked through the uprights and a score for organized labor. The NLRB will speak. Pus guts and scab candy lovers will be left with poochy lips.

The Obama appointed NLRB fighting Coca Cola is like the IBT fighting FedEx or similar to organizing Walmart. Corporate capitalist pigs win no matter what the cost
