Default Local 727 Reps, Pepsi Members Gear Up for Negotiations

“First and foremost, this local union will be completely transparent throughout the negotiation process,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “This is not the union’s contract, this is our members’ contract, and their input and solidarity is absolutely crucial.”

Union reps have spent the last several weeks collecting contract demands from members during site visits. Pepsi members also had the opportunity to attend a contract demands meeting Feb. 7 at the local union’s hall in Park Ridge. About 70 members came together to discuss the issues that are most important to them.

The Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee — which is composed of newly elected Pepsi union stewards, union representatives and experienced attorneys — is scheduled to meet Feb. 11 and Feb. 16. During these meetings, the Bargaining Committee will provide valuable input on member demands for improvements to wages, benefits and working conditions in order to create a comprehensive contract proposal to present to management at the bargaining table.

Local 727 and 673 Bargaining Committee Meet for Second Negotiation Session, Pepsi Says ‘No!’ to One Contract

“Pepsi has been taking advantage of confusion amongst its employees by having four confusing contracts, which hide important contract benefits by scattering them throughout several contracts,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 727.

Pepsi stated it was concerned about merging the contracts because their “business is declining.”

The Union Bargaining Committee spent several days preparing its proposal, which merged all four contracts into one agreement. Pepsi asked the Union during the first session for an updated Union proposal highlighting changes. The Union met Pepsi’s request shortly after the March 22 session ended, only to have Pepsi come in again on March 24 and ask for further clarity on the Union’s proposals.

With Majority of Non-Economics Settled, Union Pushes to Begin Economic Bargaining With Pepsi

With the vast majority of non-economic issues settled, the Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee asked Pepsi management to begin bargaining over economics Friday afternoon, but the company refused.

“The clock is ticking, and we still have huge issues to tackle,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “It’s time for management to get moving.”

The Local 727 Bargaining Committee offered additional meeting dates, beginning at 4 p.m. on April 25 or April 26, and the company agreed to meet on April 26. The final day of negotiations is scheduled for April 28, the day the current contracts expire.

Local 727 Bargaining Committee Presents Last, Best, Final Contract Offer to Pepsi Management

Following a 16-hour marathon negotiation meeting on Thursday, the Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee presented its last, best and final offer to Pepsi management.
“This is a very profitable company and you have a lot of long-term employees who have put their lives into this company. This is not a joke, this is very serious to them,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “I think we can all agree you have an excellent staff and they all deserve this.”

The union has given the company 48 hours to respond with its last, best and final contract offer. Once the union receives the offer, it will begin drafting a final document for the membership vote.

The company’s most recent economic offer — which came after a two-hour delay late Thursday night — included miniscule wage increases, a new health insurance plan and one paid sick day in the second year of the contract.

Local 727 Bargaining Committee, Pepsi Reach Tentative Agreement on Four-Year Contract
The Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee and Pepsi management returned to the bargaining table on June 10, and after another 10-hour negotiating session, reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year contract.

“The company met us much more than halfway on an awful lot of language, like merging the contracts and the grievance procedure. This is a much stronger contract than the members have ever had,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “While we didn’t get everything we wanted when it comes to wages, it is still the richest contract ever negotiated with Pepsi.”

Pepsi Membership Ratifies New Four-Year Contract

Pepsi members voted by a 3-to-2 margin to ratify the company’s revised four-year contract offer, which includes retroactive wage increases, merged language, improved health care and more stringent job protections for over 600 workers at four Pepsi facilities in Chicago, Elk Grove Village and Kankakee.

“This is the strongest contract this Pepsi membership has ever had, and it merges together four agreements to unite the group under one contract,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “Although we didn’t get the wage increases our members truly deserve, it’s still a very rich contract with across-the-board improvements.”
