Default Schnucks to bag 190 union warehouse workers in Bridgeton

There needs to be some kind of labor law against this! You shouldn't be able to layoff union workers just to turn around and replace them with non-union workers. How is this legal???

BRIDGETON • One hundred and ninety union warehouse workers here found out last week that Schnuck Markets is cutting their positions as the grocery chain’s new distribution center comes online in Kinloch.

Mike Goebel, secretary and treasurer of Teamsters Local 688, said chairman and chief executive Todd Schnuck informed the union about the planned changes at an April 4 meeting.

“He’s doing exactly what we have fought against for the past dozen years,” Goebel said about what he characterized as an influx of nonunion workers into the grocery business.

He said the 190 warehouse workers receive benefits and are paid between $14 and $22 an hour. He said they are being replaced by third-party workers who earn $10 to $11 an hour without benefits.

Oh and the warehouse was in Fontana Ca, they also went 3PL, this logistics companies are destroying the hard fought wages that were fought by our Unions...sad

Teamsters at Schnucks express shock, fear, concern for their families, futures
The union is in its third week of a massive community education campaign, not a call for a boycott, designed to bring the plight of its members to Schnucks customers.

And is it working. Social media lit up immediately on Saturday, April 9, when the union began handbilling at four Schnucks stores, a program that continues weekends throughout the metro area.
One Teamster at the warehouse responded to the Facebook posts:

“Thanks everyone for your support. I’m one off those 200 people and because of u I have hope,” said Khyle Walters.

Teamsters 688 files NLRB charges against Schnucks
Two charges have been filed against Schnuck Markets by Teamsters Local 688 seeking to protect the rights of 190 of their warehouse members scheduled to be fired at the end of July when Schnucks opens a new warehouse staffed by non-union workers earning half the Teamster’s pay.

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) charges accuse Schnucks with dealing directly with the involved workers instead of dealing with Local 688 as federal law requires; and illegally preventing the union’s handbilling in front of the stores’ entrances, a right backed up by a memo from County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch.

Teamsters Rally In Support Of Schnucks Workers
WOODSON TERRACE, Mo. (KMOX) – The Teamsters are stepping-up their campaign to save 190 union warehouse jobs at Schnucks.

Local 688 business representative Mike Schlueter says they’ve been handing out flyers in parking lots, “We’re not asking for a boycott right now, because we’ve still got thousands of union brothers and sisters working in their stores. We’re trying to get CEO Todd Schnuck to do this the right way, without affecting other union members.”
“These are middle-class jobs. They’re not the top of the heap. They range from $14-$20 per hour with benefits. Many of these people have been there almost 20 years,” said Local 688 secretary-treasurer Mike Goebel.

Schnucks customers supporting Teamsters; enthusiasm continues to grow
Overland, MO – Demonstrating that the enthusiasm for handbilling of Schnucks Markets continues at a fever pitch as more than 80 Teamsters Local 688 members, along with the spontaneous help from other union members, showed up recently at the Schnucks Overland store where Channel 4 was holding one of its weekly weather radio seminars.

“We circled the entire store at every entrance, and the public’s response was fantastic,” said Local 688 warehouse Business Representative Mike Schlueter. “It was obvious from people’s comments, that they are going to stop shopping there if Schnucks continues on the road to firing 190 warehouse workers when they move into their new warehouse opening this summer to be manned by scabs.”

And supportive comments are coming from Schnuck customers throughout the metro area where the Teamsters are handbilling on a regular basis.

I am just blown away by this quote from the CEO!

Teamsters vs. Schnucks battle offers lesson in St. Louis growth patterns

A year ago, Todd Schnuck was the Man of the Year.

At a St. Louis Port Council dinner in June, area unions honored the CEO of Schnuck Markets Inc., with its top award. Here’s what the man from the famous grocery store family told the union workers gathered for the dinner:

“We can grow together or we can wither away together,” Schnuck said, according to Labor Tribune coverage of the event. “If you want to protect good union jobs … membership and their families (need to) support St. Louis union retail employers. Let them know that if they think their own union jobs, wages and benefits matter, then those of their union brethren in the food industry matter as well, and they should support those higher wages and better benefits.”
And this is the first I have seen of this!!!!

The new warehouse is expected to employ 400 or more workers, but Schnucks is contracting with a nonunion company — XPO Logistics — to run the facility.

Teamsters: Schnucks boycott begins Friday, June 17
Failing a miracle last-minute intervention, a boycott of all Schnucks Markets in Missouri and Southern Illinois will begin tomorrow, Friday June 17.

“If Schnucks is willing to turn their back on the middle class, then we should turn our backs on them,” said Teamsters Local 688 Chief Executive Officer Mike Goebel in a statement released today announcing the region-wide boycott to protest the heartless firing of 234 warehouse workers, 204 who are members of Local 688, outsourcing their jobs to lower wage scabs at a new warehouse Schnucks is opening this fall in North County.

“Schnucks has turned its back on its local workers, many of whom have given their entire working lives to the company, so we have little alternative but to call for a BOYCOTT of every Schnucks Market throughout the bi-state Missouri/Illinois region,” Goebel said.

As of last Friday, Local 688’s social media campaign had reached 387,924 people, and that’s even before an official boycott!
