Deregulation of the trucking industry in the form of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 caused increased competition in the Less than a TruckLoad (LTL) industry. Non-union carriers quickly began taking advantage of their lower labor costs to gain market share. Most of the companies above were union carriers who were unable to compete, though a few were non-union carriers. The trend seems destined to continue until the LTL market is entirely composed of low cost non-union carriers.

The new federal safety laws and the mandatory healthcare will even the playing field, a bit.

Hopefully so. The above list of companies were all in business and doing great when I started driving. It's a crying shame what this industry has become.

Every company I ever worked for except my last one has gone belly up. Scab outfits and union it did not matter.

My first job when I was in high school was with Wilson Freight. I wasn't a Teamster at the time still being in high school. I used to go in after scool and sweep the dock and help the clerk check drivers in. I worked there in 1979-1980 and then they closed the doors. My last 2 checks bounced. It wasn't really much money, but it was a lot to a 17 year old. A few years ago my mother sent me somthing from the bankruptcy court that was sent to her address where I used to live. Still no money..... I never really thought I would see any after the checks were bad. It is amazing that this was in the couts for so long. Oh well that was my humble beginnings in freight! RIP Wilson Freight!

I had a buddy that worked for them in Buffalo.

I filled out an application a couple of months before they closed.

Deregulation has ruined the industry as far as job quality and safety.

The funny thing is when a consignee gets bent out of shape when their freight is damaged and they paid a 90% discount.

Terrible law for the drivers and the companies..I've grown to expect that no company I work at will never last more than 5 years or so... These people who beat the drum which says we have too many regulations....and look at what that has gotten us....not exactly getting all gov't out either...just some.....a government redistribution of wealth from the union states to the non-union states..is what these regulations and right-to work scab laws are...a government imposed federal mandates that all will go the non-union route or not survive....If only a well respected filmmakers could get a hold of all that went down in this industry..and with all that went down with right-to-work laws..BS destruction of a country.

If it wasn't for the safety laws in this country, the trucking industry would be a lot worse.
