Default CVSA’s international annual 3-day Roadcheck being held June 2-4

    4/15/2015

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) 28th annual International Roadcheck will take place June 2-4.

International Roadcheck is a 72-hour period when approximately 10,000 CVSA-certified local, state, provincial and federal inspectors in jurisdictions across North America perform truck and bus inspections.

International Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute in Canada, the United States and Mexico during a 72-hour period.

Operation safe driver week is approaching. This year’s driver enforcement campaign is speeding.

CVSA releases dates for weeklong driver crackdown
Today the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) released the dates for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week enforcement campaign.
This year,Operation Safe Driver Week will be held on July 14 — 20 throughout North America. Law enforcement agencies across the country will be out in force looking for dangerous driving by both commercial vehicle and passenger vehicle drivers during the weeklong event. The CVSA says that any driver caught driving unsafely will be pulled over and issued a warning or a citation.
The emphasis for this year’s driver enforcement campaign is speeding, according to a news release from the CVSA.
During last year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, more than 57,000 citations were issued to passenger and commercial vehicle drivers. Commercial vehicle drivers were issued 1,908 citations for speeding during last year’s enforcement effort.

A reminder that new rules are in effect on April 1 which can place a truck out of service.

Truckers can now be placed out of service for these 4 violations
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has updated their out of service criteria — and here’s what you need to know.
The updated North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria for 2019 went into effect on April 1 and contained several changes to the standards that could result in a truck or driver being placed out of service.
Here are the major out of service changes that went into effect on April 1:
    DRIVER’S SEAT (MISSING)
    DRIVER MEDICAL/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    BRAKE SYSTEMS
    STEERING MECHANISMS

I-81 enforcement blitz has caught a few drivers and sidelined many trucks.

I-81 Enforcement Blitz Puts 37 CMVs And 5 Drivers Out Of Service
A recent enforcement blitz along Interstate 81 conducted by Virginia State Police and Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles resulted in 37 commercial vehicles and 5 drivers being placed out of service.
In a release on Tuesday, May 7, officials provided more details about their one day blitz which was conducted on Wednesday, April 24.
Authorities said the focus was on commercial vehicles which, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), accounts for 20 to 30% of the traffic volume on I-81 in the Shenandoah Valley.
According to officials, the safety enforcement blitz resulted in 37 commercial vehicles and 5 drivers being placed out of service.
Combined, state police and DMV Size and Weight Compliance Agents issued 161 warnings and 37 tickets.
Of those tickets, 27 were for equipment violations and four were for violations of commercial driver’s license requirements.
In addition, 24 commercial vehicles were cited for being overweight.

Sounds like the enforcement blitz was lacking in manpower.

Truckers report closed scale houses, light enforcement during Roadcheck blitz June 4-6
The International Roadcheck inspection blitz kicked off earlier this week in North America, but some U.S. truckers reported that scale houses in some states were closed or they were waved through the scales because inspectors were busy reviewing other commercial vehicles.
Approximately 9,000 inspectors in North America were expected to inspect commercial vehicles and drivers during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual enforcement blitz scheduled for June 4-6.
Last year, CVSA inspectors handed out 537 steering-related violations and 286 commercial vehicles were placed out-of-service (OOS). There were 500 suspension violations and 538 suspension-related OOS citations issued.

During this year’s CVSA Brake Safety Week, inspectors throughout North America will be checking for critical brake violations and putting some trucks and buses out of service.
Commercial motor vehicles with brake violations will be restricted from traveling until the violations are corrected. Vehicles that pass the inspection will be eligible to receive a CVSA decal.

I guess this should go as a reminder to always perform that pre-trip inspection.

Unannounced brake inspection spree leads to 1,600 trucks placed out of service
More than 1,600 trucks were placed out-of-service during an unannounced nationwide brakes-focused inspection blitz on May 15.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance announced commercial vehicle inspectors conducted 10,358 inspections across the U.S. and Canada and sidelined 1,667 (16.1%) of those trucks.
CVSA says inspectors paid close attention to violations involving brake hoses/tubing and issued violations to 996 trucks for chafed rubber hoses and to 185 trucks for chafed thermoplastic hoses. In total, there were 1,125 violations that included chafed rubber hoses and 124 violations that included kinked thermoplastic hoses.
CVSA will hold another brakes-focused enforcement blitz next month, Brake Safety Week, which is scheduled for Sept. 15-21.
