Default L.A. Workers & Community Leaders Protest BMW Scheme

For those who aren't familiar with Randy Cammack, he's the President of Teamsters Joint Council 42 (ours) (the largest Joint Council in the entire International Brotherhood of Teamsters). Teamsters Joint Council 42

Longtime Distribution Facility Workers Ask BMW To Stop Running Over America’s Working Families

(Ontario, CA) – This morning BMW distribution workers, their families and community leaders rallied outside the gates at BMW’s parts distribution facility. Rally leaders and BMW workers condemned BMW’s plans to fire its nearly 100 Ontario employees later this summer and immediately re-open the facility the very next day with an inexperienced work force. The German automobile giant, Bavarian Motor Works AG, America’s most popular automaker for luxury-class autos, booked its richest earnings in its 95-year history this year.

“When taxpayers gave billions of dollars in bailout money to auto companies, they expected to grow the economy and save American jobs, but just the opposite has happened,” said Randy Cammack, President of Teamsters Joint Council 42, “BMW got bailed out with nearly $4 billion in top-secret low-interest federal loans and in exchange, they mock America’s laws and try to destroy working families.”

This is one of ABF,s accounts that i have been going into for years, this all started when the Mercedes parts distribution center in Fontana, ca (also Teamster) hired CEVA logistics to take over and run their warehouse about 2 or 3 years ago to break the union. Now even more great, hard working Teamsters are out of work because of corporate greed. I went by twice today while the rally was taking place to see our Brothers and Sisters I have had the privilege of serving, its really sad to talk to a 56 year old friend who is trying to figure out how he will find a job to support his family in this economy. Sorry this ended up so long but thanks to all the Teamsters who showed up to support the rally and my prayers go out to each of our Brothers and Sisters going through this at BMW.

BMW: Stop Destroying Good American Jobs
    VIDEO

After taking $3.6 billion in secret bailout loans, BMW is making a mockery of U.S. plant closing laws by firing its parts distribution workers in Ontario, CA and replacing them with outsourced workers the very next day. BMW would never treat its German workers and communities this way. Watch Local 495 members as they fight to save their – and their non-union co-workers’ – jobs.

Senator Boxer To BMW: Don't Destroy California Jobs

(Ontario, CA) – Today Senator Barbara Boxer sent a letter to BMW North America CEO Jim O’Donnell, asking him to reconsider a poorly thought-out plan to fire BMW’s nearly 100 Ontario, Calif. employees later this summer and immediately re-open the facility the very next day with a cheaper, inexperienced work force. U.S. Congressman Joe Baca (D-CA 43) sent a similar letter to BMW as well.

"...Boxer wrote, “As the economic recovery continues, it is deeply disappointing that these loyal employees would be penalized at a time when your company recently reported 2011 first quarter earnings of $1.78 billion – triple that of first quarter earnings in 2010 – and first quarter sales 21 percent greater than last year.”

Baca wrote, “[This] will needlessly layoff workers in a region experiencing the highest rates of unemployment in the country. Replacing those positions with a low wage workforce is an injustice and a blow to our local economy.”
