    Default More on Sandy Pope

To Rebuild Teamster Power | Solidarity

For the most part I like what she stands for but the big question will be "Can she win?"

Sandy can win if members vote for her and her alone! If you vote for a slate as most of us have and or do, then no she won't win. One thing one needs to look past is her association with the TDU. The TDU is neither good nor bad--they are just one viewpoint.

I have listened in on the conference calls and I hear many freight drivers from YRCW and ABF on their along with people from other parts of the union.

Each one the candidates have their own strengths and issues along with their baggage that comes along for the ride.

I think we can all agree that Sandy will focus on the UPS contract AND that could get UGLY! UPS is constantly trying figure out ways to cut their costs and responsibilities to their employees. The drawback to concentrating on the UPS contract is that unlike the auto industry, what UPS pays, the rest will have to pay, ain't going to work. UPS has deep pockets, not sure ABF does and definitely YRCW doesn't What about the smaller companies in the freight business? They won't be able to pay either.

Two places where Hoffa and Hall messed up IMHO are requiring UPS Freight to accept a contract that was designed for 125 people in Indianapolis and making the other 12,000 employees of Overnite/Motor Cargo deal with it.
The other place is the game they have been playing with the sub-contractor arbitration issue. They should have let some of the larger locals like 705, 710, 745 et. all get local agreements.

Now in defense of Mr. Hoffa and Mr. Johnson, I don't think anyone could have foresaw the mess that wrought YRCW! I suppose looking back on it buying Roadway and then the USF companies before fully realigning operations was a mistake but how does one know? It was NEVER a good merger but it is what it is and we need to live and learn from it although I doubt we will see the likes of one that size again unless ABF buys Con-Way or some other foolish plan.

So to sum up, look at what you have, look at what you might get, and then make your decision. No matter who wins, this next General President's term is going to be VERY INTERESTING!

    What: Sandy Pope Campaign Event
    When: Sunday, Sept 18 at 11:00 a.m.

    Where: Knights of Columbus
    4918 Queens Boulevard
    Between 49th and 50th Street
    Woodside, NY 11337

Countdown to Victory with Sandy Pope

    TOMORROW, SEPT. 18, 11:00 a.m.

Teamsters supporters in New York City will meet with Sandy Pope and make plans to win the election for Teamster General President tomorrow, Sept. 18 at 11:00 a.m.

This event is a must for Teamsters who want change in our union.

The event on Sept. 18 will give Teamster members a chance to meet Sandy and find out what we can do to put our campaign over the top. Ballots will go out just 2½ weeks after the event.

This is your campaign and it needs your support. Donations will be accepted on Sept 18. The Sandy Pope Campaign is raising $250,000 to reach 200,000 Teamsters when the ballots go out. That’s more than enough votes to win this fall.

When ever I speak to my brothers and sisters about a problem or what is becoming of our Union I never fail to mention they do have a choice in the upcoming election. I tell them to take a good look at Sandy and Fred before they cast their ballots. I have noticed lately people have asked me what I think of Sandy Pope. The message is getting out. The more I learn about her the more I like.

She has proven to be a solid candidate, and has good views but what concerns me (as stated above) is her ability to win without a slate. Remember, if she wins, chances are Hoffa's slate will do so as well. That means Ken Hall, Tyson Johnson, Randy Cammack, Rome Aloise, and the rest of the Hoffa slate still get in. Frankly that bothers me, because what changes?

Meaning no disrespect to Ms. Pope, but I have to stay with my current decision. I know what Fred Gegare has done for my division, and as far as I'm able to determine his slate is very solid.
