Where do you see ABF in twenty years?

It will be interesting seeing the posts on this subject.

    Re: In Twenty Years

Not to divert from ABF but the only way I see this stuff slowing is by mass organizing and contract language to slow or stop it. It will affect where ABF is in 20 years and I would suppose the funds too.

Tech Experts Predict 13 Jobs That Will Be Automated By 2030

    2. Warehouse And Manufacturing Jobs

Repeatable task-based jobs are likely to be the first to be automated. AI excels at pattern recognition, performing sequenced tasks faster and with higher accuracy than human workers. Warehouse workers and other manufacturing-based jobs will be automated as robots will be able to move inventory with greater efficiency and with fewer safety concerns than humans.
    11. Long-Haul Trucking

I think we will see significant numbers of self-driving trucks in the next five to 10 years, even before self-driving cars. There is a significant shortage of people willing to drive the big rigs down the highway and significant price pressure on their wages. Just think, wouldn’t it be great if all the trucks would stay in one lane? It would be a huge win for the shipping companies and for the general public.
    12. Delivery Services
Automation is best when it is a repetitive action. Restaurants already use automation to dispense your soda in the drive-through or fry up a batch of fries when more are needed. I see package delivery being automated at some point. Drones are already being tested to deliver packages—why not a self-driving truck with a drone to drop the package off at the door?

I think ABF and the cash cow YRC will be around.. YRC especially since they seem to make their interest payments every year.. The Unions today are in a different boat.. They have to actually go out and sell their services.. When we got into trucking about 90% of the trucks on the road were unionized.. Today I believe that number less that 10%.. The days of "Be thankful you have a job" statements from union officials are over.. The NMFA is over ..

And on a side note who knows if we will be here in 20 years.. After all there are many politicians that think the world as we know it will end in less than 10 years..That also will affect the trucking industry having to spend more capital on green technology..

I agree that it is changing and therefore So must the union Change. Not the core values but the manner in which they seek new membership.

I would think wording must be put into contracts similar to cartage or something for automation. Doubtful it can be stopped but we can at least slow it. UPS is already testing and using stuff from other threads on here.
It would take a miracle for YRC to buy alot of automated trucks. I don't know where they got the money for our handheld computers.

I wish the Union could get more trucking members but thats long gone. Trucking was the Teamsters. Teamsters was Trucking. I am surprised that ABF has been so solid and has not fallen to the financial issues that YRCW has. They have been a super well ran company for such a long time.

Was ABF a big Wal-Mart carrier as Walmart was taking off out of Arkansas in the 90's?
Or just the same as other LTL'S in relation to Wal-Mart.
                  They have Arkansas in common.

I remember back around 2012 when I was still working ABF then was a big player with Amazon.. Maybe they realized that they were not making money and ditched it.. All the big box companies nickle and dime the freight companies..I can remember when I was at RedStar when they ditched the Home Depot account because as the salesman told us it was costing RedStar $1.38 to every $1.00.. Sadly there were many junior men that lost their jobs..These pineapples in charge always look at graphs that show tonnage and seldom can they connect the dots to losses..

You are right... back around 2012 they had big plans for getting the Amazon account which increased our Amazon business pretty good (set up 3 doors for them right away until they could clear more). They just finished clearing a bunch of doors for nothing but Amazon trailers at the terminal but then for one reason or another it fell through... we never did get a reason why... we heard a bunch of rumors why but nothing concrete. They still managed to keep enough of their business for those 3 doors but never did get that big deal they wanted.

Yeah they tried in 2012 but scraped it real quick. Great decision cheap freight. We have three Amazon’s and we do very little business with them.

I think we use to get the overflow .. at one shipper ABF picked up about 20 pallets everyday and if the guy had 25 then New Penn got the other 5.. All going to a Distribution center in PA.. From what I heard though is the shipper stopped it and gave it to Truck load carriers because we would deliver the overflow days before the ABF trailer got backed in.. no DOT connecters working at Amazon..
