Con-Way Freight Workers in Texas Join Teamsters Local 657 | Teamsters

On September 12, 2014, drivers and dockworkers at Con-Way Freight in Laredo, Texas voted to join Teamsters Local 657.
“This is a great victory for the workers at Con-Way and we hope this campaign spreads,” said Frank Perkins, President of San Antonio-based Local 657. “These workers are seeking fair wages, respect on the job and job security. They also want to have a pension and improved health care coverage.”
There are 113 workers in the bargaining unit.
“We chose Laredo because it is the busiest inland port in the United States,” Perkins said. “Seven thousand trucks cross the border with Mexico every day.”
On September 9, Teamsters Joint Council 42 in Southern California filed for election at three Con-Way terminals.

It is surely a start and I hope it is going to have the "ripple effect" on the whole industry.. It is time to put Corporate America back in it place..

This isn't IBT ideology because there is and can be no religious affiliation or discrimination but my personal thoughts.

If you have any contact with organizers or with employees desiring representation or contract and they are Catholic it may be a good idea for them to contact their Bishop and notify or ask to observe at the least.
They ate supposed to support and not oppose us.
I notice that Laredo is 75% Catholic.
    Newak,NJ 58%.
    Jersey 43%.
    Philly is also not low.

The companies could get very ugly and they own the media.
Religious observation (protestant also) could be a most useful shield.
This site knows the money and political and media weapons of the antiunion army.
The Bishops are very powercul people and i think it would be wise to call them for these very sensitive/crucial / important initial battles.

Its easy for the forces of evil to attack the unions.
Not so easy to attack the churches.
    Use all resources.

Well, I am disappointed! Con-way Freight treats me wonderful. I have been gainfully employed for almost 5 years and Con-way Freight has held up it's end of our agreement. I agreed to show up every day, on time and give 8 hours work for 8 hours pay. I agreed to a pay wage and scale and they have paid according to that agreement.

Is Con-way perfect? NO WAY! However, the company is profitable and I believe FAIR to it's employees. I watch drivers EVERY DAY complain about work conditions and have decided they just can't be made happy. The old addage "would you like cheese with your whine" was not just made up. Drivers are KNOWN to whine and whine they do. Oh, they called that guy before me. Oh, they called and woke me up early. Oh, I can't believe they forced me to run that and didn't let me take that! Funny how the little guy at the bottom that doesn't have the common sense to manage his way out of a paper bag thinks he knows how to manage a company. Bologna! And Union representation! Poppycock! Who needs it.

I'm sure I'll get blasted, but I wanted to voice that not all employees are disgruntled! I love my job. I love my company and I will never buy into the union mentality! Union didn't START this business and the union has no business dictating how the business is run.

Shoot, just look at the success of the unions. I know an ex CF employee that has had his pension cut in recent years because "we don't have the membership" to support the pension at it former level. Some security that is! Unions do NOTHING except protect lazy people from getting fired when they are absolute useless to the forward momentum of a company!

    Laredo......SHAME ON YOU!!!!!!

You know you won't get any sympathy on this site. We are all pro union and happy to see Laredo vote in the Teamsters. I just have a few questions for you on that ex CF guys pension being cut. What kind of a pension was it? Was he in the Teamster's union and vested in our MEPFs? When were those supposed cuts made? Is he just recently retired from another Teamster job after CF had closed? Were they adjustable benefits taken under a rehabilitation plan under the PPA?

Please don't run away. Give me some facts because so far you haven't given me anything that even sounds believable. Do you know that there has never been a Teamster MEPF that has ever defaulted or failed to meet it's pension payouts? Do you know that the anti-cutback rule in the ERISA law forbids pension funds from cutting retiree's paychecks?

Come on Happy at Conway give me something more than sour grapes.........................Oh I'm curious if the we was just a slip or were you a CF Teamster "we don't have the membership"

Brother, you said a mouthful. I appreciate your love for your company and work ethic. Everyone should be so proud.

One thing everyone can appreciate is seniority. Having language to protect that is important to many. Personally, I would not want to sit home while a junior man is called for work with no recourse to regain the money lost.

Yes, let's take a look at the success of unions. A strong well managed company does well. Poorly managed companies fail. Union or not. Those are facts. There is strength in numbers and the more we all stand together the better off we all are. Had it not been for the unions presence in trucking, we all would be working for much less than we are now.

The pension issue is serious for some and not a problem for others. Those that have been properly educated know the facts. The stock market/return on investment plays a big role in this scenario also. Personally my pension is fully funded and is expected to gain substantially over the next several years. Having access to multiple streams of retirement income is what we enjoy. That pension check arrives in the mail every month for our retirees along with other prudent investment choices we have available.

As for unions protecting the lazy? Sure it happens. Union employees get fired also. It happens at non union barns too doesn't it? Lazy bums get away with a lot at every work place depending on who you are. Nothing new there.
