Greetings all; This is my first time, first day, here at this site. Even though I am part of the same Local my Grandfather belonged to I really don't know much about Union history or politics.
The reason I am searching around and educating myself is that I've noticed that the company contracted to manage the Transit Bus and Paratransit service I work for has operations across the country and I don't know if anyone knows what's going on regarding the big picture. MV Transportation seems dedicated toward making driving a bus for a living a poverty level vocation, and it seems part of their success so far is keeping people in the dark about what they are doing, and I think they are even playing one union against another.
Not long ago they started sort of harassing our Dial-A-Ride paratransit drivers by cutting their hours, regardless of seniority, giving split shifts (unpaid) and not giving start times for the next day until sometime the evening before, etc., as though they are part-time on-call workers after being regular full-time employees for years. And it's not that there is not work or demand for their services either. People may even be turned away and given to other drivers working for MV in another city 10 miles or more away, with a different Union, and there is a van outside our office everyday just waiting to take our drivers work away.
Anyway, I just wonder how this could happen and why others do not know about it. How can they play one union against another like this. What would happen if all the drivers in all their divisions and under all their contracts could know what was going on elsewhere, from California to New York to Alaska. And, what if prospective contract award negotiators knew about law suits, strikes, injuries and deaths, and unfair labor practices?
MV is slowly taking over a corner of the driving profession and working hard to make it as low paying as possible. By being the low bid on contracts they are just sweeping the nation.
I just want to connect the dots and spread the word and get some communication going. Starting here is good, but I want to reach drivers with Amalgamated Transit Union and others too.
Thanks for letting me post here.
Best wishes and good luck to all.
From the reply I got it looks like I posted in the wrong section? I'll work on it.
I am thinking of writing up a story on my situation, or rather the situation of the management company MV, and sending it off to 60 Minutes, Larry King Live, and Oprah.
The idea being that this company has thrived partly by keeping their procedures and management quality secret, including deaths and injuries and Union dirty dealings, etc.
Actually, I don't really know the details, but I think others will find out.
Thanks and no matter who comes and goes managementwise or this company or that...there will always be The Teamster's Union.
Hey, how are you doing?
No, that name does not ring a bell right off, but I might have seen him here. MV is a small company working on a shoestring budget apparently, but it's amazing they now have something like 21,000 drivers working for them.
Their CEO, Alexis Lodde, is stepping down next month and I wonder what is going to happen next.
Are they treating you ok?
I don't work for them but we represent them here @ Local 822. We had some issues with them here but we're also in a RTW state and have to deal with those issues also. I can get you in contact with them some people there. Give it a couple of days as I'm out of town. Hit me on the PM I might have some privvy info for ya
If a new category is added, maybe it should read:
"Transit Coach and Paratransit Van Operators"
since they go together sometimes and there are even laws that Transit Authorities must offer so much paratransit service along with fixed route.
