Default Grocers, unions talk, prepare for possible strike

Talks resumed Wednesday between major Puget Sound area grocery chains and unions representing 21,000 of their workers.

Those talks, now in their sixth month, are aimed at reaching a new contract for workers at Safeway, Albertsons, QFC and Fred Meyer in King, Snohomish, Pierce, Kitsap, Thurston and Mason counties.
The scope of a potential strike grew wider Wednesday morning as the UFCW announced that 1,000 union grocery workers in Thurston and Mason counties have joined 20,000 other union workers in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Kitsap counties in granting union officials authority to call a strike.

Those Thurston and Mason county workers voted on the strike authorization proposal Tuesday. The results of that vote — 99 percent in favor of the strike authorization — were announced Wednesday.
The UFCW represents most unionized grocery workers in King, Pierce, Kitsap, Thurston and Mason counties. The Teamsters represent grocery workers in Snohomish County.

NO GROCERY WORKERS STRIKE IN PUGET SOUND

(SEATTLE, WA) -- The large grocery store workers strike that was headed for a 7:00 pm start last night by some 21,000 union employees against four large grocery chains, was averted at the wire by a tentative agreement reached by the negotiating teams for both sides in the dispute.

Grocery worker contract vote begins Tuesday

Tuesday, grocery workers will get their first look at the tentative deal reached between the stores they work for and the UFCW and cast their vote.

Union members who are working under expired contracts can stop by several locations Tuesday and Wednesday to review the offer and cast their vote. Vote results will be made public Thursday. Other union members who have contracts that are about to expire will vote next week.

I hope it works out for our Brothers and Sisters in Baltimore in New York we have Whole Foods in some Locations and they are expensive , I guess since they are non-union all the profits are going into corporate bonuses instead of to the workers

Giant has been slowly trying to get rid of the union. I wish the workers luck in this process of keeping the union intact.
