More than 500 employees at AGY glass fiber manufacturing in Aiken are entering their seventh week without jobs after contract negotiations between the company and their union proved fruitless this spring.
The workers, members of Teamsters Local Union No. 509, have been demonstrating in front of the plant at 2556 Wagener Road since May 1, when they say they were locked out and some even escorted off the premises.

“Nobody really thought that this was actually going to happen,” said Corinne Thomas, who has worked 10 years at AGY as an inspector. “There’s really no way to prepare for something like this. Some people might have had enough money to supplement for two months and some people might have had enough to supplement them for a week.
