    Jewel-Osco management has been secretly forcing Teamsters Local 727-represented pharmacists to pay more than other employees for the same health insurance, the union recently learned.

    “Our members are paying radically higher premiums for the exact same health and welfare coverage that other Jewel-Osco employees enjoy,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 727. “Our members are being wrongfully singled out and financially punished. It’s completely outrageous.”

    Below is a comparison of the 2016 HRA Plan premiums for Osco pharmacists, Jewel-Osco warehouse and transportation workers represented by Teamsters Local 710 and the company. The vast majority of pharmacists and warehouse/transportation workers enrolled in the company’s health insurance use the HRA Plan.

    Union Works with Pharmacists to Prepare for CVS, Osco Negotiations
    Teamsters Local 727 representatives have spent the last several weeks gathering input from CVS and Osco pharmacists in preparation for upcoming contract negotiations.

    Pharmacists had the opportunity to provide contract demands via mail, email, the union’s websites and meetings with Local 727 representatives.

    Both current three year-contracts expire May 7, 2016.

    “This is not the union’s contract, this is your contract,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “Our renewed commitment to keeping the dialogue between the union and our members constantly open has given each and every pharmacist the chance to make their voice heard about the issues that are most important to them.”

    Local 727 Osco Bargaining Committee Prepares for Contract Negotiations
    The Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee came together April 4 to prepare for contract negotiations with Osco management, which are set to begin April 12.

    The Local 727 Bargaining Committee — composed of Osco pharmacist stewards, union representatives and attorneys — spent the day going through the union’s draft proposal, which is based on member demands gathered by the union via site visits, meetings at the union hall, direct mail and online submissions.

    Osco stewards had the opportunity to voice concerns and provide crucial feedback in order to arrive at a complete, comprehensive contract proposal that best reflects the membership’s wishes.

    “We have assembled an incredibly strong team of dedicated stewards, experienced union reps and skilled attorneys to represent our members’ best interests at the bargaining table,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “Everyone understands what is on the line and that in order to be successful, we must stand together with one voice.”

    Local 727 Urges Osco to Work With Union, Company Still Ignoring Pharmacists’ Concerns

    The Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee opened contract negotiations April 27 by urging Osco management to work with the union to reach a fair agreement.

    “We need to change the dynamic of our ongoing partnership,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727. “Over and over, we have expressed what our six core issues are, and if we can see movement on those issues, we can create a good relationship going forward.”

    The union’s six core non-economic demands relate to tech hours/overlap, coverage, breaks, part-timers’ benefits, job postings and floaters’ geographic restrictions.

    Osco Accepts Union’s Contract Extension Offer; Mediation Set to Begin May 18
    Osco management has accepted the Teamsters Local 727 Bargaining Committee’s offer to extend the contract covering about 500 Chicago-area Osco pharmacists until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, May 20.

    The union’s contract extension offer, which includes full retroactivity, was contingent on the company agreeing to meet with the Local 727 Bargaining Committee and a federal mediator on Wednesday, May 18, and Friday, May 20.

    “We are hopeful that the company will return to the bargaining table with a more reasonable mindset that will allow us to reach a fair agreement,” said John T. Coli, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 727.

    Hope this helps in the fight to secure a fair contract.

    The union representing Chicago-area CVS pharmacists warned of safety risks Tuesday from "management's mistreatment of overworked and understaffed pharmacists," allegations that come as the parties negotiate a new contract.

    About 150 CVS pharmacists have been working without a contract since their last three-year agreement expired Saturday, Teamsters Local 727 said in a news release. The union claims management has been unresponsive to workers' concerns about quality-of-life issues including uninterrupted breaks, preservation of the nine-hour workday and the elimination of "superfluous tasks" that take time away from their primary responsibilities.

    "The public needs to know that when pharmacists are constantly given more work with less help and little down time during their long and demanding shifts, this affects their performance and well-being — and it also can impact customer safety."
