Default Sand & Gravel Update: Another Lowball Offer Rejected as the Probability of Strike Inc

For the second time in a week, concrete trucks across the Seattle area sat empty as their drivers attended another meeting at the Local 174 Union Hall to discuss their Employers’ latest contract offer. And also for the second time in a week, the Companies’ lowball offer was rejected with a boisterous voice vote, as the group unanimously agreed that the offer was not even worth voting.

Over 90% of the 294 Teamsters mixer drivers and support employees working at Cadman, Stoneway, CalPortland, Salmon Bay Sand & Gravel, and Lehigh Cement were in attendance at the 9:00AM meeting. Once again the room was packed, with orange “Rock Solid” shirts worn by most of the meeting’s attendees.

The highlight of the meeting was the speeches given by the members themselves. These speeches came not only from members of the rank-and-file Bargaining Committee, but from various people in the assembled crowd: older workers who had over thirty years on the job, younger workers who had never been on strike before, and workers from nearly all of the different Companies and work locations represented in the room. The message of the speeches was universal: we are standing together in solidarity to demand that our Employers give us the respect we deserve.

As of 7:00AM this morning, Teamsters Local 174 members at concrete company CalPortland are on an Unfair Labor Practice strike. The goal of the strike is to get the Company to stop violating federal labor law and bargain in good faith.

Negotiations with five different Sand and Gravel companies — CalPortland, Cadman, Stoneway, Salmon Bay Sand & Gravel, and Lehigh Cement — broke down several weeks ago after the Employers refused to bargain in good faith, refused to provide information necessary to continue negotiations, and rejected Union proposals without explanation or counter offer. Because of these Unfair Labor Practices, of which CalPortland was the worst offender, Teamsters at that company walked off the job in an Unfair Labor Practice strike this morning.

“We told CalPortland over and over again that they needed to follow the law and bargain fairly or they were going to end up with a work stoppage,” said Local 174 Secretary-Treasurer Rick Hicks. “They didn’t listen to us, and now here we are. We hope that this can be resolved quickly and we can get back to the bargaining table to get a contract that everyone can agree to.”

Teamsters Local 174 Unfair Labor Practice Strike Poised to Expand
Today, on the sixth day of the Unfair Labor Practice strike against sand and gravel company CalPortland, the rest of the nearly 300 Teamsters in the sand and gravel industry prepare to join their 86 CalPortland Brothers on the picket lines.

The potential for expanding the strike was discussed at a 9 a.m. meeting at the Teamsters Local 174 Union Hall this morning, and the reaction from the crowd was thunderous: the drivers are absolutely ready to join CalPortland on strike to protest the various Unfair Labor Practices their employers have committed at the bargaining table.

These Unfair Labor Practices, which include refusal to bargain in good faith, refusal to provide information necessary for bargaining, and rejecting proposals without explanation or counter-offer, have made it impossible for the Union to reach any sort of deal with the Employers.

“As we have said again and again, you cannot reach a deal with someone who isn’t willing to actually negotiate with you,” said Teamsters Local 174 Director of Negotiations Patty Warren. “By the end of the day, the best they were willing to do was to propose the same offer that our members had already unanimously refused to even vote on. That is not bargaining in good faith.”

    Strike over !
The strike by local concrete delivery truck drivers that slowed construction projects across King County is coming to an end following a labor agreement reached Friday.

More than a quarter of King County’s union concrete truck drivers had walked off the job a week ago, and the rest were getting ready to join them. The Teamsters said the new 4-year contract includes “record-setting wage increases,” as well as increased benefits.
