Teamsters Union And Allies Protest Bill Gates And Cambridge Union Society

CAMBRIDGE, England, Oct. 7, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Two members of the Teamsters Union, which represents U.S. refuse collectors at Republic Services, America's second-largest rubbish disposal corporation, protested Microsoft founder Bill Gates at the Cambridge Union Society yesterday. They were joined by supporters from Unite the Union, which represents refuse collectors in Cambridge and across Great Britain.

The Teamsters Union and Unite the Union representatives denounced both Bill Gates and the Cambridge Union Society for giving Bill Gates its annual Professor Hawking Fellowship. American refuse collectors in Massachusetts, members of Teamsters Local 25, have been on strike against Republic Services for over a month. Bill Gates is the largest single owner of Republic Services stock, and in addition, Gates' personal investment manager sits on Republic Service's Board of Directors.

The protestors held banners and distributed leaflets that said "Bill Gates Treats Hawking's Legacy Like Rubbish."

Bernie Egan-Mullen, a member of Teamsters Local 25 in Massachusetts, said, "Bill Gates could direct Republic to stop abusing us, but so far he has turned his back toward us. We have been on strike since late August, after the company refused to agree to a contract with a livable wage and affordable health insurance. Professor Hawking was an outspoken advocate of the National Health Service, and I'm guessing he would be shocked at how much we have to pay for health care. Meanwhile we are paid, on average, 40 percent below what it takes to make a living wage for a family with one adult and one child."

Teamsters and Republic Meet for Negotiations
(BOSTON)—Teamsters Local 25 met with Republic Services in an effort to end the six-week strike taking place in the towns of Marshfield, Rockland and Abington. This morning’s negotiations session was the eighth meeting since negotiations began in March.

Local 25 made significant modifications to its proposal on pensions and health insurance and several other issues which would conform to the benefits currently enjoyed by Local 25 members who are employed by Republic Services in Boston, Revere and Quincy. Republic responded by reoffering its August 21, 2019 proposal, which was the original cause of the strike.

Marshfield Sanitation Strike Gets Support From Bernie Sanders Campaign
*Also posted in the Bernie thread

MARSHFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — About two dozen sanitation workers walked off the job 47 days ago, demanding Republic Services in Marshfield negotiate their first contract with Teamsters Local 25.

The striking workers were joined Monday by members of Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign, including Mike MacKenzie.

"These workers are in a place where they need the help of workers all over the country," he told WBZ NewsRadio's Suzanne Sausville. "These people are working as hard as they possibly can in a dangerous occupation. They should be given a decent wage, a livable wage."

Sanders himself put out a statement saying he supports the workers, and called on Republic Services to negotiate a fair contract.
The strikers say they're in it for the long haul, camped out on Route 139 with tents and grills.

Driver Bernard Mullen said the workers just want what other facilities in Quincy and Revere have: a union contract with the Teamsters.

"They have a better retirement plan, they have better healthcare, and their living wage is a considerable amount higher than the guys here," he said.

But Mullen said the company is unwilling to budge.

Striking sanitation workers decry low pay as company makes millions for Bill Gates
Workers for Republic Services, the second-largest sanitation company in the US, are going on strike amid new union contract negotiations with workers in 10 cities around the country.

The company’s largest single shareholder is the billionaire tech mogul and global philanthropist Bill Gates, whose private investment firm Cascade Holdings owns nearly 34% of the company’s stocks, earning over $100m annually in dividends from the shares. Gates’ investment has become a focus for strikers’ complaints.

In 2018, Republic Services made a profit of $2.81bn and estimated a savings of $190m from Trump’s tax cut bill passed in December 2017. In 2018, Republic Services reported returning $1.2bn to shareholders through stock buybacks and dividends.

“I haven’t had a raise since 2004,” said Demetrius Tart, a Republic Services residential driver in Cumming, Georgia, for nearly 15 years. “I’ve been making the same amount of money since day one, no pay increase, while the company is continuing to give dividends to Bill Gates, the executives of the company, stockholders, and leaving the frontline guys hung out to dry.”

Republic strike creates ripples in North Atlanta

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Sanitation workers on strike at Republic Services in Marshfield, Mass., extended their picket line to the company’s operations in Cumming early Friday, Nov. 1, creating ripples through parts of Forsyth County and North Fulton.

About 30 Republic Services workers in Cumming, who are members of Teamsters Local 728, refused to cross the picket line.

The most immediate effects were felt in Alpharetta, where the city contracts with Republic to service over 24,000 households.
