EVESHAM — Layoff notices have been sent out to township employees.

The move comes after township clerical and public works employees, represented by the Teamsters Local 676 union, rejected temporary furloughs proposed by the township as it begins to address the economic toll of COVID-19.

Township Manager Robert Corrales on Tuesday called the rejection “disheartening.”

“This is not something that we wanted to do, and we were trying to avoid layoffs in every way possible. We thought the furlough was going to be the best option for all employees, it would have allowed them to keep benefits and minimize the financial impact,” Corrales said.
