Some Walmart employees get raises, others to lose their jobs

We have one Sam's club that I know of in ABQ but I shop at Costco. Not sure how this will affect us but ABQ cannot afford anymore layoffs.

NEW YORK (AP) — For some Walmart employees, the day brought news of a pay raise. Others learned they were out of a job.

Walmart said Thursday that it is boosting its starting salary for U.S. workers and handing out bonuses. The announcement came as the company also confirmed it is closing dozens of Sam's Club warehouse stores — a move that a union-backed group estimated could cost thousands of jobs.

The world's largest private employer said it was closing 63 of its 660 Sam's Clubs over the next weeks, with some shut already. Up to 12 are being converted into e-commerce distribution centers, the company said.

It did not disclose how many people would lose their jobs, but said some workers may be placed at other Walmart locations. Making Change at Walmart, a campaign backed by the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, estimates that 150 to 160 people work at each Sam's Club store, meaning the closures could affect about 10,000 people.

    WallyWorld is doing it again.
More layoffs, but adding lower paid jobs to replace them.
Walmart is cutting thousands of store manager positions and adding new lower-paid positions, Bloomberg reports.
The retailer is removing 3,500 salaried co-managers and adding 1,700 assistant store managers.
The managers whose jobs are cut will be able to apply for other positions.

Walmart’s bait-and-switch didn’t surprise Bill Londrigan, president of the Kentucky State AFL-CIO.

“This is the second huge corporation to pull this stunt,” he said.

Right after Walmart President and CEO Doug McMillon announced that the country's largest retailer was boosting wages for new hires to $11 an hour and giving some hourly workers one-time bonuses of up to $1,000, the company added a Lt. Colombo-like, "One more thing" -- we’re closing a bunch of Sam's stores nationwide, some without advance notice.

AT&T, Londrigan recalled, "promised bonuses, then laid off thousands.”

McMillon said the raises and bonuses are a direct result of the GOP tax cuts. “The billionaire class is trying desperately to give Congress and the liar-in-chief cover for passing the biggest tax giveaway to the rich and their corporations in history while sticking it to everyone that works for a living,” Londrigan said. "Oh, well, we told you so.”

After bonus announcement, Walmart fires thousands of co-managers, replaces them with cheaper workers

On Friday, there was news of more pain for Walmart workers. The company confirmed to Business Insider that about 3,500 “co-managers” will be laid off across the country. They will be replaced by new, “assistant manager” positions, which would have a lower salary. The laid off workers will be able to “apply” for these new job

More jobs lost at Walmart ...
Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is cutting as many as 1,000 jobs at its headquarters this year and next, the latest effort to streamline a retail empire under threat from Amazon.com Inc.

The first wave of layoffs totaled between 400 and 500 jobs and hit the company’s marketing, human resources, merchandising, real estate and other divisions this week, the Bentonville, Arkansas-based chain said. Those affected will have 60 days to find a new role.

A second phase of cutbacks will come in 2019, when some buildings are consolidated to make way for the company’s new corporate headquarters. Under 500 positions will be part of that wave, Wal-Mart said.
