Default SC Gov. Haley takes anti-union message to Boeing workers

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — A new radio ad featuring Gov. Nikki Haley is urging factory workers at South Carolina's Boeing aircraft plant to reject efforts to establish a labor union.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reports (Gov. Nikki Haley in new anti-union ad from Boeing South Carolina - Post and Courier) the spot is scheduled to start airing on stations in the Charleston region Monday.

The International Association of Machinists union has been ramping up efforts to organize the company's North Charleston operations, where Boeing makes the 787 Dreamliner. The union represents thousands of Boeing production workers in Washington state

So now we have a standing governor come right out and tell people to reject unionization.

I hope the workers stand strong and realize those aircraft will be built one way or another. Why not stand with the others that do the same work, for the same company and get the same pay and benefits ?

This is nothing new for Haley. Last year she bragged that she wore high heels so she could kick the unions out of S.C.. She said that union companies should stay out because S.C. doesn't need or want them. After living in this red state for a year I see that many don't like us northerners with our liberal democrat mentality. But they damn sure want and need our money to build up their economy...... It appears that most jobs are only part time and in the healthcare, hospitality and service industries.

I remember that 2631. That was my first exposure to her and I immediately formed an opinion and let me tell you it is not a good.

She sounds like such a sweetheart, just like our Susana Martinez, the first Latino, Female Governor!!! Who gives a flying $#@&*%!!!! These two women can hold the much touted title of middle class killers!

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Nikki Haley will use much of her State of the State address Wednesday to promote South Carolina's anti-union reputation and try to kill efforts to unionize Boeing's North Charleston plant.

Haley, who has lambasted unions throughout her tenure, will say she's confident the International Association of Machinists union will again fail in its efforts, according to a 530-word excerpt of her prepared remarks provided to The Associated Press.

Earlier this week, an anti-union radio ad featuring Haley began airing in the Charleston area.

The Republican governor considers the state's low unionization membership an economic development tool. In her fifth annual address to the Legislature, she will note that South Carolina has the third-lowest percentage of union workers in America, at less than 4 percent.

Democrats plan to counter Gov. Haley’s anti-union rhetoric ahead of Boeing vote

Wouldn't if be so fabulous if after all Boeing has done to keep the union out, along with this horrible governor, that workers voted to become union members?

South Carolina’s Democratic Party plans to push back against Gov. Nikki Haley’s strident anti-labor rhetoric ahead of the pending vote on forming a union at the Boeing assembly plant in North Charleston.

“We’ll make sure in terms of the public perception there is equal pushback,” party Chairman Jaime Harrison said Tuesday during a conference call with reporters. “Because we know Gov. Haley is going to do everything she can to push back.”
While the Democrats don’t yet have funds or a campaign strategy, Harrison said Democrats will work “with our labor friends” to ensure the Boeing vote is fair and fully explained.

Harrison said Haley has gone out of her way to demonize unions, comparing them to thugs. He called the characterization false, one-sided and something the party plans to address in its response.

NLRB schedules union election for Boeing SC
More than 3,000 production and maintenance employees at Boeing South Carolina are eligible to vote on April 22 to decide whether they want union representation, following a National Labor Relations Board’s decision today to allow an election at the local plant.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers filed a petition for an election with the NLRB on March 15. The NLRB had to review the number of eligible voters to determine if an election could be held.
Tensions about a possible election have been growing in the Lowcountry between the IAM and Boeing. Pro- and anti-union billboards are displayed across the Lowcountry, including on Interstate 26 and Dorchester Road. Both entities have run ads on local radio stations, including ads from Boeing featuring Charleston Mayor Joe Riley and S.C. Gov. Nikki Haley.

The Machinists union has been trying to unionize the more than 7,500-employee Boeing South Carolina campus for several years. The IAM opened an office in North Charleston last year and has since been sending mass mailings and meeting with employees.

Even if they win the union vote, Boeing Machinists power will be limited in South Carolina

If supporters do win the upcoming April 22 vote, a Machinists union at Boeing South Carolina still will wield substantially less clout than the union does in Washington state.

The major differences stem from within the Boeing plant, and from the surrounding culture.
The underlying difference on the inside at Boeing (NYSE: BA), Wheeler said, would be that even if the union wins, everyone working at Boeing’s South Carolina 787 Dreamliner plant wouldn’t have to be union members, which would undermine the union’s bargaining strength.

Along with a few others I can think of.
