Default UAW begins reaching out to Tesla workers, official says

UAW officials have had contact with employees at Tesla Motors’ Fremont, Calif., assembly plant, a top union official said in the latest acknowledgment that the union is interested in organizing the automaker’s workers.
In an interview with Automotive News, UAW Secretary-Treasurer Gary Casteel said a regional director and staff have been communicating with workers at Tesla’s 5.3 million-square-foot plant, building on previous comments from union President Dennis Williams.
Casteel, who is not directly involved with the UAW’s Tesla relations but has spearheaded the union’s organizing push at Volkswagen’s plant in Chattanooga, said the union typically reaches out to workers to gauge interest ahead of a potential organizing push.

Default Tesla employee describes unsafe work conditions in call for union

Silicon Valley entrepreneurs are famously resistant to labor unions, and Tesla CEO Elon Musk is no different. But the billionaire mogul is now facing a unionization push by workers at the California factory that makes Tesla electric vehicles — and Musk is fighting back in the press.

In a Medium post published Thursday, Tesla factory worker Jose Moran explained why he reached out to the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) to unionize the Tesla plant. Moran alleged mediocre pay, unsafe working conditions, and long hours formed part of the basis for the union drive.

“Most of my 5,000-plus coworkers work well over 40 hours a week, including excessive mandatory overtime,” Moran said. “The hard, manual labor we put in to make Tesla successful is done at great risk to our bodies. Preventable injuries happen often.”

I hope frozen yogurt isn't going to sway their vote for a union!

Elon Musk Slams Tesla Union Drive, Promises Workers Free Frozen Yogurt

In a lengthy Thursday night email to Tesla employees, CEO Elon Musk defended his record as an employer, and appealed to workers not to join the United Auto Workers union.

In the message, first leaked to Electrek.co and later obtained in full by BuzzFeed News, Musk took direct aim at claims made earlier this month in a Medium post by factory worker Jose Moran. Moran alleged that long hours of physical labor once forced six of his eight team members to take medical leave simultaneously. Musk disputed this allegation, claiming a Tesla investigation has proven it to be false. “After looking into this claim, not only was it untrue for this individual’s team, it was untrue for any of the hundreds of teams in the factory,” he wrote.

The Tesla CEO also lambasted the efforts of the United Auto Workers union to unionize Tesla employees at the company’s Fremont, CA factory, calling the organization’s tactics for doing so “disingenuous or outright false.” Musk alleged that the UAW’s “true allegiance is to the giant car companies, where the money they take from employees in dues is vastly more than they could ever make from Tesla.”

All it took was a snow cone machine at FedEx. A few wieners on the grill at another barn.

The company will make all kinds of promises. Most of them will be nothing but empty promises.

Notice the blowhard from the company and his anti union speech? Company good, Union bad. What he failed to acknowledge is that Union he was condemning will pry his pockets open and get a little bit more for the workers than "they could ever make from Tesla!"

Tesla offers pay rises and job guarantees to defuse labor tensions

Tesla Inc offered pay increases and job guarantees to pacify labor stress at a key German provider, whose founder and chief executive left company last month, German labor officials stated.

Klaus Grohmann, former head of Grohmann Engineering, a maker of automated production systems, has left the company, Tesla and German trade union IG Metall informed on Wednesday.

Grohmann Engineering has assisted Tesla competitors Daimler and BMW construct production facilities for electric vehicle batteries. Tesla agreed to purchase the company in November and it is crucial to the Silicon Valley automaker’s bid to prosper in the mass market by enormously increase output.

Since the purchase, Tesla has offered job guarantees and pay rises to the firm’s 700 workers in the village of Pruem near the Belgian border, under threat of strike action arranged by IG Metall, the effective labor union which dominates Volkswagen.

Tesla factory employees describe grueling work conditions where people pass out 'like a pancake'

I am rather curious how these statistics compare to union auto manufacturers.

The appetite for Musk's electric cars, and his promise to disrupt the carbon-reliant automobile industry, has helped Tesla’s value exceed that of both Ford and, briefly, General Motors (GM). But some of the human workers who share the factory with their robotic counterparts complain of grueling work pressure they attribute to Musk’s aggressive production goals, and sometimes life-changing injuries.

Ambulances have been called more than 100 times since 2014 for workers experiencing fainting spells, dizziness, seizures, abnormal breathing and chest pains, according to incident reports obtained by the Guardian. Hundreds more were called for injuries and other medical issues.

In a phone interview about the conditions at the factory, which employs some 10,000 workers, the Tesla CEO conceded his workers had been "having a hard time, working long hours, and on hard jobs", but said he cared deeply about their health and wellbeing. His company says its factory safety record has significantly improved over the last year.
