In my small town, we only have Walmart and our Kroger store, Smiths Food and Drug. I would be extremely unhappy if they ever decided to close our Smiths. When Walmart first opened we were all afraid that is exactly what would happen. Years later, so far so good.

Hundreds of union workers showed up outside Krogerís Mid-Atlantic headquarters in Roanoke on Tuesday to protest a potential store closing and job losses in Norfolk.

More than 300 members of the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400 came from multiple states on behalf of the storeís workers, filling several charter buses and marching across Peters Creek Road to Krogerís offices. They delivered five shopping cartsí worth of petitions to Mid-Atlantic division President Jerry Clontz asking for Kroger officials to meet with store employees and let them know that their jobs are safe.

The protest centered upon the grocerís recent acquisition of Farm Fresh stores in the Hampton Roads area. The owners of Virginia Beach-based Farm Fresh Food & Pharmacy earlier this year announced they were selling some of the Farm Fresh stores to Kroger.
