Default Amazon exploits workers, retail union charges in slamming LIC move

A new report titled "What's Wrong With Amazon?" points out alleged cases of anti-union intimidation and unsafe working conditions.

"Amazon is promising to bring 25,000 new jobs to Long Island City, but one of the city's largest unions warns that the move could also bring the tech giant's controversial employment practices too.

The Retail Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU) joined a host of city and state officials Wednesday for the*release*of a report detailing Amazon's alleged*anti-union activities and mistreatment of workers at its locations across the country. RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum*said stories of*constant pressure to prevent*workers from unionizing*should be alarming, and*called*for elected officials to hold the company*to higher worker standards."

"City and state officials should agree that Amazon's mistreatment and exploitation of workers is not welcome here," he said. "We can and continue to push Amazon to improve its behavior before it opens any corporate office here."

Amazon is the evil corporate empire. Worse that Wal-Mart even dreamed of.

I have never been a big Amazon shopper except for hard to find used books. However my family members continually want Amazon cards for Christmas. We did buy a prime membership almost a year ago and I won't do it again. I always bargain shop before buying something and what I have noticed is that with that prime membership, Amazon has now jacked up all the prices on everything. Over 9.00 for a box of tea that I was able to buy for a little over 3.00 at the tea maker's website and at Sprouts. That is only one example. I also don not like what I am reading about how they treat their employees.

RWDSU Prez: Don’t Call Yourself Pro-Union If You Turn A Blind Eye To Amazon

New York, NY – Online retail giant Amazon.com has a notorious record of “mistreating and dehumanizing workers” in some 16 countries around the globe — and if you turn a blind eye to it, you should forget about calling yourself “pro-labor.”

That’s the scathing message the head of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union [RWDSU] delivered Wednesday morning ahead of City Council hearings on the $3 billion deal to construct a new Amazon headquarters in Long Island City, Queens.

“Nobody can call themselves ‘progressive’ or ‘pro-worker’ or ‘pro-union’ if they accept or ignore Amazon’s behavior,” RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum told a large contingent of staunch Amazon critics assembled on the steps of City Hall this week.

Perhaps we should merge the Amazon threads. Seems they influence retail as much as Walmart.
This story goes with the last post talking about how Amazon treats their employees.

Report: Amazon Warehouses Called 911 for Mental Health Crises At Least 189 Times in Five Years
E-commerce giant Amazon has long been reported to be an unpleasant place to hold down a job. Article after article has relayed claims of an ultra-competitive workplace culture, employees being treated like soulless robots, sweatshop-esque performance requirements, and long hours of monotonous work. That includes mandatory seasonal overtime that some workers have said sometimes results in injuries.
Here’s an unflinching look at what those labor conditions have meant for some members of the richest man in the world’s workforce: From October 2013 to October 2018, authorities responded to 911 calls at least 189 times for “suicide attempts, suicidal thoughts, and other mental-health episodes” at Amazon warehouses, according to a Monday report by the Daily Beast. That’s just the ones that were found, the report noted, with the 46 warehouses in 17 states where the calls were placed accounting for “roughly a quarter of the sorting and fulfillment centers that comprise the company’s U.S. network.”

How Amazon automatically tracks and fires warehouse workers for ‘productivity’

"Amazon’s fulfillment centers are the engine of the company — massive warehouses where workers track, pack, sort, and shuffle each order before sending it on its way to the buyer’s door.

Critics say those fulfillment center workers face*strenuous conditions: workers are pressed to “make rate,” with some packing*hundreds of boxes per hour, and losing their job if they don’t move fast enough. “You’ve always got somebody right behind you who’s ready to take your job,” says Stacy Mitchell, co-director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and a prominent Amazon critic.

Documents obtained by*The Verge*show those productivity firings are far more common than outsiders realize. In a signed letter last year, an attorney representing Amazon said the company fired “hundreds” of employees at a single facility between August of 2017 and September 2018 for failing to meet productivity quotas. A spokesperson for the company said that, over that time, roughly 300 full-time associates were terminated for inefficiency."

Amazon plans to cut Prime shipping times – and their workers will pay for it

"There is no stopping Amazon from taking over the world. The retail behemoth had a*blockbuster first quarter in 2019*with revenues of $59.7 billion and $3.6 billion in net income, an all-time record and more than twice what it was making a year ago.

In addition, the third most valuable tech giant said that it plans to invest $800 million to make one-day shipping the default option for Prime members, thereby cutting down priority shipping times in half.

Amazon hasn’t detailed whether the improved shipping times are a result of optimized processes, or of increased workloads for warehouse staff. But numerous reports, including one as recent as yesterday, indicate that working conditions for warehouse employees are still far from ideal."

Amazon can't force arbitration in contractor-employee case

"A federal court in Washington has ruled that Amazon can’t compel individual arbitration in a misclassification lawsuit filed by its drivers.

U.S. District Judge John Coughenour denied Amazon’s motion on Tuesday, April 23, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, saying that the Federal Arbitration Act was inapplicable and that Washington state law can’t be used to enforce the arbitration provision.

A class action lawsuit was filed in October 2016 claiming that Amazon misclassified its drivers as independent contractors instead of employees. According to court documents, all but 165 of the tens of thousands of putative class members were parties to a contract that contained a provision mandating individual arbitration."

The evil empire continues to push. What's next? Automation to replace humans?

Amazon’s one-day shipping plan sparks backlash from labor union

(CNN) — Amazon wants to turn its famous two-day delivery into just one-day on most Prime orders. But can warehouse workers handle it?

The company’s plan to spend $800 million this spring to speed up deliveries for Prime members has sparked a tense back-and-forth between an Amazon executive and the leader of a major workers’ union.

Stuart Appelbaum, president of the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, said speeding up deliveries could be dangerous for Amazon fulfillment center employees. Appelbaum said workers are already struggling to keep pace and handle 200 to 300 orders per hour during a single 12-hour shift.

I am really losing my taste for Amazon very quickly. Just let my prime membership expire today actually.

Amazon exploits Their Evilness by lower prices on their merchandises, just like the hardcore drug dealers that gets the people addicted.
And who’s to blame? The people!
If people in America stopped buying from them, they would stop this Monster Evil Company that’s killing the Land Of Opportunity Dreams in America !
