Trump's large union crowd at Shell was given the option of not showing up — and not getting paid

The choice for thousands of union workers at Royal Dutch Shell’s petrochemical plant in Beaver County was clear Tuesday: Either stand in a giant hall waiting for President Donald Trump to speak or take the day off with no pay.

“Your attendance is not mandatory,” said the rules that one contractor relayed to employees, summarizing points from a memo that Shell sent to union leaders a day ahead of the visit to the $6 billion construction site. But only those who showed up at 7 a.m., scanned their ID cards, and prepared to stand for hours — through lunch but without lunch — would be paid.

“NO SCAN, NO PAY,” a supervisor for that contractor wrote.

Interesting that the union leaders sort of rolled over on this.

I'm guessing it was a bit of a blind side....along with a page from Putin's dictator handbook.

All I have to say is read the whole thing. Interesting......

I'd go and stand to hear Rocky Bleier speak without getting paid. You know I gave up posting on Trump because we lost too many TOL members over politics. But you did open the door by trying to compare Trump to Bleier. There isn't any comparison in my mind. I'm not a Steeler fan but I am a fan of Rocky Bleier.

Bleier captain of the Notre Dame football team and drafted by the Steelers. Then drafted by the US army and, unlike "cadet bone spurs", answered the call and served. Not in the USO special services but in the infantry volunteering to go to Vietnam. Wounded twice and losing part of his foot he was told he would never be able to play football again. But with courage and hard work enduring incredible pain he went on to play 9 seasons and won 4 super bowls before retiring.

I wouldn't go across the street to hear Trump or any other politician of either party speak. If I had been working at the Shell site that day I'd have taken off without pay.

I used Rocky Bleier' s name because it was mentioned in the article. These guys were on OT. I would have went if it was Hillary or Obama.
As far as TOL losing members over politics. Yeah your right but it does seem one sided.

Glad I read all the posts after you originally asked about seeing Rocky Bleier. Fact is ... never heard of him. I'm sure there are many people all of us have never heard of, or about their feats that propelled them to notoriety.

As for the workers being on O/T. That is wrong. Either way, forced to attend or no pay on a regular workday ... purely a propaganda infused directive.
Here explains the pay and the O/T issue.
Shell spokesman Ray Fisher explained that the workers onsite have a 56-hour workweek, with 16 hours of overtime built in. That means those workers who attended Mr. Trump’s speech and showed up for work Friday, meeting the overtime threshold, were being paid at a rate of time and a half, while those who didn’t go to hear the president were being paid the regular rate, despite the fact that both groups did not do work on the site Tuesday.
Take it away you want. Forced to listen and view propaganda ... or you don't get paid, strikes a sour note for me.
