Default Mack workers set to go on strike, begin picketing Sunday morning

About 3,500 Mack Trucks employees in three states — including the bulk of the division’s Lehigh Valley workforce — were set to go on strike Saturday night for the first time in 35 years.

In a letter posted late Friday to the United Auto Workers Local 677 website, UAW Secretary-Treasurer Ray Curry informed the company that the UAW Mack Truck Council voted to begin a strike at 11:59 p.m. Saturday. The letter notes that employees working at that time will exit company facilities in an orderly manner.

“If you are working, please leave the building at this time and go home,” the union told workers in a message on its website.

Workers were asked to show up at 8 a.m. Sunday for picketing.

This strike covers employees in 3 states.

More than 3600 Mack Trucks workers strike in three states
According to the United Automobile Workers (UAW), the workers are striking to resolve a number of employment issues, including wage increases, job security, COLA, wage progression, skilled trades, shift premium, holiday schedules, work schedules, health and safety, seniority, pension, 401(k), healthcare and prescription drug coverage, overtime, subcontracting, and temporary/supplemental workers.
“The last four years we have helped Mack Truck make significant profit through our work,” said Doug Irvine, President of Local 2301 and President of the Mack Truck Council. “All we are asking is that the company treat us with the dignity and respect we deserve in making them successful.”
Mack Trucks is a subsidiary of Swedish-owned Volvo.

This is the first time that Mack trucks workers have gone on strike since 1984, when more than 9000 workers went on strike for 9 days.

Another plant has been idled due to the strike.

Mack Strike to Idle Production at Volvo’s Virginia Plant
The ongoing Mack Trucks strike will temporarily idle the largest Volvo truck manufacturing facility in the world.
Volvo Trucks North America on Oct. 17 notified employees of its 1.6 million-square-foot plant in Dublin, Va., that the facility will stop production Oct. 21 due to a lack of engines and transmissions. The facility, called the New River Valley assembly plant, is supplied with those parts by Mack’s Hagerstown, Md., powertrain plant, where production has stopped because of the strike.

Volvo spokesman John Mies said the production stoppage will result in the temporary layoff of the plant’s roughly 3,000 employees.

    Contract ratified.

Mack Trucks Union Workers Approve Labor Agreement
Mack Trucks announced late on Nov. 3 that United Auto Workers members ratified a four-year collective bargaining agreement with the company. The contract covers more than 3,500 Mack workers across six facilities in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Florida.
Members of UAW Local 677, which represents workers in Allentown, Lower Macungie Township and Middletown, Dauphin County, voted on the contract from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 3 in the Allen High School gymnasium. The union, on its website the morning of Nov. 4, confirmed that members ratified all local and master agreements but did not disclose vote totals, promising more details would follow.

The new contract will expire at 11:59 p.m. Oct. 1, 2023. Members will receive a $3,500 bonus now that the deal is ratified.
In addition to UAW Local 677, the other local unions involved were: UAW Local 171 and 1247 in Hagerstown, Md.; UAW Local 2301 in Baltimore; and Local 2420 in Jacksonville, Fla.
