Ronald Robert Carey was born March 22, 1936, in New York City. The son of a union truck driver, he joined the Teamsters in 1955 after serving in the Marine Corps. He began driving UPS delivery vehicles in New York and became active at his local.

Ron Carey, 72, a labor leader elected Teamsters president as a firebrand reformer and in a controversial dispute years later banned for life from the union, died of lung cancer Dec. 11 at New York Hospital Queens.

There was a thread started in the "Union Hall" that has since been closed. Rightfully so. One of our former Teamster Presidents has passed away. Love him or hate him, at least show some respect.

On Oct. 12, 2001, Carey’s claim that he did not know or approve of the scheme was upheld by a jury in federal court in New York, yet federal overseers never lifted the ban on his participation in his union.
