The strike demonstrated the union spirit of “an injury to one, is an injury to all!”
I am happy to see that there is still some solidarity left in our union.

Default The Local 804 UPS Walkout

Haven't seen this posted here yet.

At the end of February, an entire shift of UPS Teamsters walked off the job in a ULP Strike of solidarity with an improperly fired co-worker.

Long story short, the Maspeth employees have been placed on "working discharge" and the local is negotiating with the company to reduce some 250 terminations. Several petitions are being circulated, by far the biggest one online coming from Working Families Party, NY with over 5,000 signatures collected over this past weekend into today (Monday).

    Working Families Party Statement

"UPS has taken a sudden wrong turn by threatening to fire 250 workers for protesting the unjust termination of one of their fellow workers. Expressing solidarity with a union activist who was wrongfully let go without an arbitration hearing should not be cause for termination for hundreds of dedicated workers. UPS should swiftly resolve this situation in Maspeth by reinstating and negotiating with these workers instead of leaving 250 families out in the cold." -Bill Lipton, NY State Director, Working Families Party The Working Families Party is a grassroots, community and labor-based party that supports candidates who support working families. "Outrage spread quickly across the country as many Teamsters involved in the Vote No on the UPS contract movement heard the news. Hundreds of comments poured in on the group’s facebook page pledging solidarity with Local 804 and the drivers. With several supplements still outstanding, and dissatisfaction among many UPS workers over the proposed national contract, many workers expect such harsh retaliation by UPS could spark a national pushback at Big Brown."

An update on the UPS walkout in Queens.

The United Parcel Service’s self-proclaimed “appropriate and justifiable action” of firing nearly 250 employees sparked protests outside its Maspeth facility Friday with elected officials and union leaders who thought otherwise.
A crowd of workers came together outside the Maspeth UPS headquarters last Friday morning to show solidarity against the employer for passing out the pink slip. The Teamsters Local 804 crew has already collected a star-studded list of support with names like the Working Families Party, city Public Advocate Letitia James, Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz (D-Flushing) and City Council members Elizabeth Crowley (D-Maspeth), Rory Lancman (D-Fresh Meadows) and Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside).
Not a republican in the crowd !

Local 804 President Tim Sylvester spoke loudly and forcefully at the Friday morning protest while calling for accountability and conversation. But even in protest, those in attendance urged the workers to be vocal but cordial, telling workers not to be late for their shifts. The union leader said UPS signed the same contract as its workers, agreeing to a grievance procedure and to “innocent until proven guilty,” a practice they must honor.
Hopefully this will be resolved and all those drivers will not be working under a termination letter.
