Seems a lot of workplace shootings lately. Many unhappy people.

May those souls rest in peace now.

Hoffa Statement on Workplace Shooting at UPS in San Francisco

The following is a statement from Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa on the tragic shooting that occurred today at a UPS facility in San Francisco.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the victims and their families of this tragedy. The safety of our members is our top priority. As is usually the case with these situations, details are still forthcoming. In the meantime, we are working closely with our local Teamsters Union to assist all of our members who are affected by this senseless act.”

Victims of UPS’s deadly drive for profit

Members of the Teamsters union who work at UPS are reminded daily of management’s antagonistic relationship with us. Yet the mainstream media made an issue that Lam had a “grievance with the company”–as if this is unusual.

Lam had filed a grievance–a procedure used to address a violation of the Teamsters-UPS contract–over excessive overtime. In fact, many grievances are filed by workers every day at UPS. The problem is that many are blocked by management and take months, if not years, to resolve, if they ever are.

This stalling by the company is specifically designed to discourage workers from filing grievances or otherwise challenging poor conditions or contract violations. Management also uses harassment to try to intimidate workers from filing.

If the public ever wanted their eyes opened wide, they should talk to the BA that represents the UPS package barn. The grievances filed could fill a warehouse.

One thing I noticed is my UPS man (we have had the same guy for years) used to stop and chat about the union for a few minutes when he delivered packages to us. He knows my husband works for ABF. Not anymore! The guy is working at break neck speed!

UPS Drivers Reluctant to Return to Site of San Francisco Shooting Rampage | Transport Topics

Most of the drivers won’t even enter the building.

The trauma from a mass shooting at a United Parcel Service distribution center has made going back to work almost unimaginable for many of the nearly 40 workers who witnessed the June 14 massacre.

As tactical police officers confronted 38-year-old Jimmy Chanh Lam inside the Potrero Hill building after he killed his co-workers, a team of service providers specially trained to assist in mass shootings rushed to the scene. Within half an hour of the first police call, they were helping drivers who had fled the building when the shooting started.
