Teamsters union OKs pact despite members rejecting it

Here is an opinion piece on this issue.

When the ratification results were announced, Denis Taylor, director of the Teamsters’ Package Division, said the union would resume bargaining to seek improvements, but he later said, “The leverage is not there. Certainly, the company understands they’ve got an issue that they’ve got to deal with,″ reported Bloomberg News.

“The fact that they’re moving to ratify the contract over a ‘no’ vote is a huge betrayal to the members, and I think it’s very damaging to the labor movement as a whole,” said David Levin, an organizer with Teamsters for a Democratic Union (TDU), a reform caucus within the larger union, which has more than 10,000 members nationally. “There’s a lot of attacks against the labor movement, from Right To Work, etc., and it’s a terrible time to be sending workers the message that union leaders can just ignore and override the voices of the members.”

Two Outstanding UPS Supplements To Be Re-Voted Soon

Two of the six outstanding UPS supplements will go to members for a re-vote soon, Teamsters Package Division Director Denis Taylor said following a conference call with the Teamsters National UPS Negotiating Committee yesterday.

Chairmen of the outstanding supplements provided updates to the committee regarding negotiations that have taken place since the supplements were rejected during the first vote.

The two supplements that will be re-voted soon are the Central Pennsylvania Supplement and the Upstate and West New York Supplement.

Four others are not yet ready for a re-vote, and negotiations will continue. The four are the Western Pennsylvania Supplement, the Local 243 and Metro Detroit Supplement, the Local 804 Supplement and the Trailer Conditioners, Inc. (TCI) Supplement.

What’s Next for UPSers Who Voted No?

UPS Teamsters got sold out when the Hoffa administration stood with the company against the members and imposed the contract.

But the Vote No movement proved that a majority of us want change. We won’t stop organizing until we have a union that fights for us. Here are three next steps for UPSers in 2019.
Work Together to Enforce the Contract

The language in the new national contract doesn’t go into effect until all the supplements are ratified.

After introducing strong opening proposals, Hoffa’s negotiator Denis Taylor settled far short of what could have been won.

Still, there is new language that can make a difference for rank-and-file UPSers. It will be up to us to push for its enforcement.

Rockford, Illinois UPS workers outraged by sellout Teamsters contract
Three months after the Teamsters union forced a concessions-laden contract on 250,000 United Parcel Service (UPS) workers across the US, Teamsters Local 710 has imposed a nearly identical contract on more than 6,600 Midwest UPS workers in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.

While the union reported that the contract passed on January 11 with 1,838 votes (66.57 percent) for the contract and 923 against (33.53 percent), there was immense opposition to the concessions proposed by the Teamsters. Of the 6,604 eligible voters under Local 710, only 41.8 percent voted on the contract. The high abstention rate was itself a vote of no confidence in the union, which is seen by large numbers of workers as a tool of corporate management.

UPS workers in the economically depressed area of Rockford, Illinois, were a center of opposition to the contract. The Rockford air hub is one of the largest facilities with more than 2,000 workers. The bulk of the workers at the Rockford hub, as across the country, are low paid warehouse workers that are highly exploited. The turnover rate is also very high.

The World Socialist Web Site UPS Worker Newsletter has gotten reports from workers that they did not receive their ballots or were not informed about the contract. One worker commented, “The worst part is more than half voting ‘yes’ had no idea what they were voting on.”

Teamsters Union Faces Revolt From Members Over UPS Contracts
When UPS workers in western Pennsylvania held a vote on their new collective bargaining agreement earlier this year, 96 percent of them voted against it and told their union, the Teamsters, to go back to the bargaining table to get a better deal.

But it appears union leadership plans to implement the contract anyway.

“Everybody’s outraged,” said Gary Piso, a UPS driver in Pittsburgh and trustee for his local, which is one of nine Teamsters affiliates covered by the contract in Pennsylvania.

Those locals are now in a dispute with their international union, which is headed by Teamsters General President James P. Hoffa. The union is close to settling all its contract negotiations with UPS across the country. The local leaders in Pennsylvania said the union’s national negotiating committee informed them last week that they plan to approve the offer turned down for the region.

That, in turn, has prompted accusations that the union is violating the will of members. Jon Bedillion, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 585 near Pittsburgh, told UPS workers in a letter Saturday that he and others were looking into legal action against the union if it moves forward with approving the contract.

“We are at a loss to understand the National Committees [sic] reasoning as to why they would implement such a substandard agreement for Western Pa.,” Bedillion wrote. “However, we want to also let you know that we are in the process of having legal counsel research what actions, if any, that we may pursue against the International.
