Default The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Our UPS guy at least had a helper this year.

UPS wants holiday cheer delivered quicker — even if it kills their workers.

Earlier this month, UPS, the largest private, unionized logistics company in the United States, imposed a seventy-hour workweek on its package car delivery drivers. Illegal? Not according to the company:

UPS appreciates exceptional effort of all employees during our peak holiday shipping season, when delivery volumes near double the normal level. Our employees’ scheduled workweek is in compliance with Department of Transportation requirements. Union-represented employees are paid time and one-half for work above forty hours per week and they receive the industry’s most attractive compensation and benefits program.
You’d almost get the impression from the statement that the Department of Transportation requires delivery drivers to work this seventy-hour week. But, in fact, UPS is exploiting a loophole to reset the clock, forcing drivers to work past the usual legal maximum of sixty hours.

In response, Sean O’Brien, president of the Boston-based Local 25 and a former Hoffa protégé, issued a statement from New England’s Teamsters Joint Council 10, denouncing the company’s actions:

While the union and our members realize this is an extremely busy time of the year, we also realize that UPS is again putting “profits ahead of people.” As Teamsters, we put our members’ safety and health as our foremost concern. And implementation of a seventy-hour workweek jeopardizes our members and the general public’s safety and health.

UPS always had a helper on board during the holiday season ... at least around here. We see all the delivery companies on a daily basis, and I live on a dead end road.

I don't usually have the deliveries that I had this year so I can't say for sure if he has always had helpers.

We have lived in PA for over thirty years and during that time we have had three UPS regulars, they have always had helpers during the season and it started just before Thanksgiving..
Usually they would hire kids in the delivery areas they lived in. One year we had a neighbors kid do it. Best was they were given whatever uniforms they had and seldom fitted. As far as package drivers go? I believe they were out there to the truck was empty.

Even if they have helpers, 70 hours a week is pretty ridiculous.

Seventy hours a week for a truck driver was almost a given for many years..

Yes, and many fudged the logs to show otherwise. Even some of the regulars at New Penn who claimed to make a Boston turn from my home domicile, had to fudge time.

However, a package car driver doing 70 hours is too much. IMO

I completely agree. Package and freight P&D are entirely different animals versus OTR. 70 hours is ridiculous.

Exactly! My husband is a road driver. Gone all the time. But what he does is far different from what a UPS delivery driver has to do all day.

I beg to differ as I have done both.. Both can be very hard jobs whether when your a road driver your out hooking a set of doubles in a snow storm or your a P&D driver dragging that inside delivery to an elevator up to the 19th floor somewhere.. Or your a road driver that legally can drive but has a hard time finishing because you didn't get any sleep the day before.. to me they were equal ..
